Kay was born October 15, 1921, in rural Odebolt, the daughter of Albert and Pearl (Dinges) Landgraf. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Odebolt. Read More	Kathleen (Kay) Determan, 91, Wall Lake, Iowa, formerly of Early, passed away September 13, 2013, at Twilight Acres in Wall Lake. Kay was born October 15, 1921, in rural Odebolt, the daughter of Albert and Pearl (Dinges) Landgraf. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Odebolt. After attending Catholic and public schools in Odebolt and Early, she graduated from Odebolt High School in 1939. She then attended to Buena Vista College for normal training. She taught in rural schools in Sac County for two years. At the age of 21, Kay was diagnosed with tuberculosis and was hospitalized in Oakdale, Iowa for two years. During the long stay, Kay was engaged to Urban Determan and waited for him while he served in World War II for three years. With her health back and Urban home from the War, Kay joined Urban in marriage on October 23, 1945 at Sacred Heart Church, Early. They made their home on their farm in rural Early. They welcomed four children: William (Bill), Rosemary, Steve and Jan. Kay took pride in keeping an orderly home and caring for her family. She always grew a large garden and canned its bounty each summer. She enjoyed sewing for her home and her daughters and patched many jeans for her husband and sons. In 1983, Urban and Kay moved into Early for their retirement years. She was a member of Sacred Heart Church and Guild and the Neighborhood Coffee Club. Her family and her faith were her passions. Together, she and Urban enjoyed going to dances and traveling. They toured many states in the U.S. and took a trip to Europe. Some of her hobbies and activities were limited with the diagnosis of Parkinson's disease over 30 years ago. Kay's love of shopping and fashion were not curtailed even when she traveled by her wheelchair. She loved the shopping trips with her daughters and could still find the bargains. She was an avid reader including teenage fashion magazines so she knew the latest trends. Kay also enjoyed playing bridge with friends and 500 in their couple's card club. The last nine years Kay's home has been Twilight Acres, Wall Lake and their staff became part of her extended family. She never complained about her health or her wheelchair. Survivors include: son Bill and wife Susan of Sioux City; daughter Rosemary Groteluschen and husband Roger of Marshalltown; son Steve and wife Barb of Early; daughter Jan Burhop and husband Kirby of Schaller. Twelve grandchildren: Billie Determan, Louisville, KY; Barry Determan and wife Traci, Shawnee, KS; Dr. David Groteluschen and wife Caitlin, Green Bay, WI; Jennifer August and husband Jason, Marshalltown; Mark Groteluschen and wife Mackenzie, Cedar Rapids; Beth Sheets and husband, Cameron, West Des Moines; Andy Determan and fiancée Sally Gelven, Kansas City, MO; Dan Determan, Orlando, FL; Kourtney Determan, Washington, DC; Karl Burhop, Leavenworth, KS; Vince Burhop and fiancée Greta Hagen-Richardson, Iowa City; and Alex Burhop, Schaller. Eight great-grandchildren: Ashlie Determan; Ayla, Emory, and Willem Groteluschen; Landry and Jefferson August; Harper and Ezra Groteluschen. She is also survived by her brother George Landgraf and wife Margaret, Odebolt and sisters Dorothy Mae Blass, Sac City; Barbara Faber, Spencer; Jean Jackson, Davenport; Helen Eckerman and husband Paul, Conrad; Lois Kipf and husband Roger, The Villages, FL and many nieces and nephews. Preceding Kay in death were her husband, Urban; her parents, Albert and Pearl Landgraf; her sisters Mildred Olberding , Marilyn Fitzgerald and infant Mary Ann Landgraf; her sisters in law Dorothy Landgraf and Rita Tiefenthaler; her brothers in law Raymond Blass, Norman Olberding, Bernard Faber, Don Jackson, Robert Fitzgerald and Elmer Tiefenthaler.
