She was the widow of the late Byron Walling Thompson, who was a lawyer and District Court Judge in Frederick. Mrs. Thompson was born Dec. 10, 1924, at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. Her parents were Col. Ralph Irwin Sasse and Kathryn Ringgold (Nichols) Sasse. She was living at Buckingham's Choice at the time of her death. Known to her family and friends as Kay, she attended schools in New York, Mississippi, Texas, Pennsylvania and Maryland. She was an alumna of Saint Mary's Seminary, now St. Mary's College of Maryland. She graduated from Hood College as a mature student. She earned a master's degree in English as a second language from the University of Arizona. For several years before her marriage, she was the medical librarian for the Doctor's Library at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia. After her marriage, she moved to Frederick where she was librarian for the Frederick Memorial Hospital School of Nursing and later the Doctor's Library at FMH. She also tutored foreign students in English as a second language. Kay Thompson was an avid reader and she especially enjoyed Spanish and Latin American authors. She was a member of the American Association of University Women and she and her husband enjoyed traveling, and she traveled to Cuba, Mexico, Central and South America and the Caribbean after his death. One of her greatest loves was cats. Horses were another great joy for her. A life long Episcopalian, she was a member of All Saints Parish in Frederick, and a member of the Episcopal community at Buckingham's Choice. She is survived by a daughter, Kitty; two first cousins on her maternal side; and two second cousins on her father's side. There will be a gathering and reception beginning at 3 p.m. before the memorial service at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, at Buckingham's Choice, 3200 Baker Circle, Adamstown.
