She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Louis Cody Sossamon, and three children, Kit Smith and her husband, Joel, Polly Player and her husband, Warren, and L. Cody Sossamon Jr. and his wife, Sherry. Mrs. Sossamon was born July 20, 1922, in Columbia to Dr. N. Bruce Edgerton and Kathryn Moss Salley. Read More	Kathryn "Salley" Edgerton Sossamon, 86, of Gaffney and West Columbia, died Tuesday, July 29, 2008. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Louis Cody Sossamon, and three children, Kit Smith and her husband, Joel, Polly Player and her husband, Warren, and L. Cody Sossamon Jr. and his wife, Sherry. Mrs. Sossamon was born July 20, 1922, in Columbia to Dr. N. Bruce Edgerton and Kathryn Moss Salley. Her father was a prominent physician in Columbia and head football coach at the University of South Carolina for several years. Her brother, Bruce, was also a doctor and died in 1988. After the death of her parents, Mrs. Sossamon was reared by her aunt, Mrs. Wm. Peques (Elizabeth Salley) Pollock. She attended public schools in Columbia and Orangeburg and was valedictorian at Orangeburg High School. She was a graduate of the University of South Carolina, where she earned a Phi Beta Kappa Scholarship. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Tri- Delta and other university organizations, vice-president of the student body and graduated magna cum laude. She was a founding member of the Gaffney Junior Woman's Club and a beloved teacher at Gaffney High School for many years. Mrs. Sossamon was a longtime member of Limestone Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday School for a number of years. She enjoyed working in her yard and walking with friends. A cheerleader while attending USC, she was a loyal, lifelong Carolina supporter and avid Gamecock fan, for which she was featured on the cover of the USC alumni magazine. "Kaki" is also survived by eight grandchildren: Joel E. Smith, Lowndes Smith Macdonald, Cody Smith, Stokes Player, Will Player, Katie Sossamon, Lou Sossamon, Abbie Sossamon and one "bonus" grandchild, Paul Davis. Also surviving are two greatgrandchildren, Alex Smith and Connor Smith. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, July 31, at Limestone Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the service. Memorials may be made to Limestone Presbyterian Church, 101 E. Jefferies St., Gaffney, S.C. 29340.
