Lindquist, was born July 1, 1938, in Salina, Kansas. She graduated from Emporia High School in Emporia, Kansas, in 1956, and from the Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia in 1960, where she distinguished herself as a national-level champion debater and speaker. Read More	Kay Ann Lindquist Harter, 74, of Harrisonburg, passed away on Tuesday, March 12, 2013. Kay, daughter of the late Elmer L. and Linnette R. Lindquist, was born July 1, 1938, in Salina, Kansas. She graduated from Emporia High School in Emporia, Kansas, in 1956, and from the Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia in 1960, where she distinguished herself as a national-level champion debater and speaker. She was married to Carl Leroy Harter of Bern, Kansas, in 1961. Kay and Carl lived in New Orleans, Louisiana, for many years, where they both pursued graduate-level education at Tulane University and where Kay gave birth to their two children. Kay earned a Master's degree in Foreign Languages, specializing in Spanish, and she worked as a teacher in primary education and at the college level. Kay and her family came to Harrisonburg in 1979, when Carl became Head of the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work at James Madison University. Kay earned a Master's degree in Business Administration from JMU, and served as Financial Aid Officer for Blue Ridge Community College. She later returned to teaching Spanish at Turner Ashby High School until her retirement. In her retirement, Kay was very active as a volunteer with Skyline Literacy and a member of the American Association of University Women. She also taught Spanish at her grandchildren's pre-school, Building Bridges. Kay is survived by her brother, Evan L. Lindquist and wife Sharon of Jonesboro, Arkansas; her son, Kevin L. Harter, her daughter, Kim Hook and husband Randy, and grandsons Jackson and Sawyer Hook, all Harrisonburg residents. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 pm, Friday, March 15, at the Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg, with Tom Hook facilitating. A private burial will be held at a later date in Kansas. In lieu of flowers, donations in Kay's honor may be made at skylineliteracy.org or to the Carl L. Harter Memorial Scholarship with the JMU Foundation.
