Cemetery, Miller. Reck Funeral Home, Miller, is in charge of arrangements. Kenneth Atlee Augspurger, son of Atlee and Dorothy (Koch) Augspurger, was born May 31, 1923 in Sioux Falls. He graduated from Washington High School, Sioux Falls, in 1941. Shortly after graduation, he worked in a civil defense plant in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and then enlisted in the U.S. Merchant Marines. He was trained in Shepards Bay, N.Y., and became a radio operator and officer after further training in Boston Harbor. He served on tankers and liberty ships, making trips to Venezuela, Aruba, Scotland, England, New Guinea and The Philippines. He was involved in the invasions of Normandy, North Africa and The Philippines. He received campaign ribbons from the Atlantic, Pacific and Mediterranean Middle East War Zones. He also received the Philippine Liberation Ribbon during his distinguished service in WWII between 1942-1946. He was united in marriage to Lorraine I. Pavlis on February 14, 1946. Along with his parents, brothers, sisters and their families, he moved to St. Lawrence, S.D., in 1946 where they opened the Sportsmans Lodge, one of South Dakota's first commercial pheasant hunting operations. They later, as a family corporation, owned Atlee Motor Sales, Augspurger Chevrolet and Buick and Midwest Supply stores in Miller, Chamberlain, Gettysburg and Platte. He retired December 2001. He was a long-term, active supporter of the St. Lawrence Community Church, president of A.W. Augspurger and Sons, member and director of the S.D. Automobile Dealers Association, president of the CCC, director of First National Bank and served on the St. Lawrence and Miller school boards. He was a member of the St. Lawrence Civic Club and was active in the Kiwanis, Masons and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He will be remembered as a kind, gentle man who loved people, his family and his Lord. Grateful for sharing his life are his wife, Lorraine of Miller; a son, Dr. Ken (Marianne) Augspurger of Sioux Falls; two grandsons, Jamie and Jeffrey of Sioux Falls; a brother, Marvin (Rosemary) Augspurger of Miller; three sisters-in-law; two brothers-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who all agree that no one could tell a story better than Kenny Augspurger. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Wendell, Robert and an infant brother Roland; two sisters, Ione Reese and Delores Deardorff.
