Description	:	Kenneth Dean Leroy Simonson passed away at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa on Friday morning, February 22, 2013 at the age of 89. He was born December 9, 1923, the second of seven children to Alva and Dora (Young) Simonson. Growing up in Stratford, Ken enjoyed all the small town school had to offer including music and sports. Read More	Kenneth Dean Leroy Simonson passed away at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa on Friday morning, February 22, 2013 at the age of 89. He was born December 9, 1923, the second of seven children to Alva and Dora (Young) Simonson. Growing up in Stratford, Ken enjoyed all the small town school had to offer including music and sports. He had an opportunity to tryout with the Sox's but opted instead to enlist in the army. His military career spanned 25 years including the Army Air Corp, Army National Guard and finally retiring from the Air National Guard with the rank of Senior Master Sergeant. He was a proud member of the 132nd Silver Squadron. Ken was an accomplished carpenter and cabinetmaker and built many homes throughout Iowa. His pride in workmanship continued into woodcarving and clock making that he enjoyed into his retirement. He was a scoutmaster in the Boy Scouts, loved horses and played fast pitch softball. He spent many an hour on his John Deere mowing acres of lawns. In another career, he retired from the Iowa Department of Transportation with 30 years of service. He enjoyed traveling, wintering in south Texas, visiting family in Colorado and sightseeing in parts unknown. He is survived by five children, Mick Simonson and wife Pam of Silt, Colorado, Pat Simonson from Glenwood Springs, Colorado, Margene Kennedy and husband Tom of Des Moines, Iowa., Mary Moore and husband Steve of Loveland Colorado, and Dennis Simonson and wife Lynda of New Braunfels, Texas; eleven grandchildren; twenty-four great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; two sisters, Carolyn Ann Cottington of Boone, Iowa and Doris Ward and husband Jim of Idaho; and a special friend Evelyn Patterson of Stratford, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Marlowe, Helen Marie, and Juanita; and a brother Duane. His body was cremated. A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday morning, June 1, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the Calvary United Methodist Church, 901 Moore Street in Stratford, Iowa with Rev. Gina Spohnheimer officiating followed by interment in the Oakwood Cemetery north of Stratford.
