KS 66801. Mr. Place died June 7, 1999, at his home. He was employed early in life at his father's business, the Place Dairy, and at the age of 23, became a preacher at the Wichita Baptist Tabernacle under Rev. Art Wilson. Mr. Place was the founder of the Bethel Baptist Church in 1956, where he was pastor until he retired in 1962 because of poor eyesight . He then held revival meetings throughout the country and later, he and his family, known as the "Singing Place Family," traveled together. His mother, Bertha Orrell, traveled with them and played the piano. Mr. Place and his wife, Elsie, owned and operated the Hillcrest Motel in Duncan, Okla., from 1976 until 1981. They farmed at Reading from 1981 to 1997, when they returned to Emporia. Kenneth Raymond Place, the son of Ralph and Bertha Waterman Place, was born Sept. 6,1922, at Emporia. He attended Union School. He married Elise Livingston on May 17, 1947, at Wichita. Mr. Place is survived by his wife; two daughters, Judy Ortiz of Emporia and Kathy Matrai of Reading; a son, Raymond Wiggins of Texas; two sisters, Rose Harden of Wichita and Jean Dugan of McPherson; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
