Description	:	Dr. Kristen B. Solberg, age 95, of Ellensburg, Wash., peacefully passed away at 12:26 p.m. on Nov. 28, 2012 at the Royal Vista Nursing home in Ellensburg. Kris was born April 13, 1917, in Freeman, S.D., to Knud and Anna (Carter) Solberg. He graduated from Freeman High School in 1935 and from Augustana College in 1942. Solberg, age 95, of Ellensburg, Wash., peacefully passed away at 12:26 p.m. on Nov. 28, 2012 at the Royal Vista Nursing home in Ellensburg. Kris was born April 13, 1917, in Freeman, S.D., to Knud and Anna (Carter) Solberg. He graduated from Freeman High School in 1935 and from Augustana College in 1942. On July 18, 1944, he married Opal Christopherson in Corpus Christi, Texas. Kris served in the U.S. Navy during WWII as one of the Navy’s first radar instructors. After the war, he was the principal and a teacher at the high school in Centerville, S.D., for six years. Using the G.I. Bill, he returned to school and earned his doctorate in educational psychology and counseling at the University of Wyoming in 1953. He was then invited to head the newly established psychology department at Pacific Lutheran College, and the family moved to Tacoma, Wash. Later he served as the Dean of Students at Pacific Lutheran University until 1964. Kris worked for the Veteran’s Administration as a clinical psychologist from 1965 until his retirement in 1982, serving at the American Lake (Wash.) and Ft. Meade (S.D.) veterans hospitals. For the last 10 years of this work he was the chief psychologist at American Lake, during which time he was instrumental in establishing one of the first Vietnam veteran’s outreach programs in the country. Kris and Opal next moved to Ellensburg, where he set up a private practice, Valley Psychological Services, and taught as an adjunct faculty at CWU. After his second retirement in 1999, Kris and Opal enjoyed traveling and spending the winters in Arizona. Kris is a past president of the Washington Psychological Association, and served for 15 years on the Washington State Examining Board of Psychology. Kris had a lifelong love of theater, acting in and directing plays in college, and serving as a high school drama coach. He later enjoyed opportunities to produce church and community theatrical events. He also enjoyed reading, tending his roses and, most important, having long conversations with his children, grandchildren and friends. Kris was an active member of the Lutheran church wherever he lived. He was very proud of his Norwegian heritage and made several trips to visit relatives in Norway. Kris Solberg touched many lives both professionally and personally. He was a husband, father, friend, teacher, mentor, advisor, encourager, and a shining model to follow. In the words of his granddaughter, Kristin Kay, “The sky shines bright over the world today, honoring a great man’s life and his works. All who had the great fortune to know him will tell you how he touched their lives, opening their hearts to the beauty the world gives to those who walk in love, compassion, and grace. Know Papa, that your life was well lived and trust your love will shine on in all those you leave behind. “ Kris is survived by his wife, Opal; two sons: Ken and wife Jacque, Minnetonka, Minn., Don and wife Joy, Ellensburg, and daughter, Ona, Hamilton, Va.; his brother, Knud Solberg, Freeman; four grandchildren: Jessica Solberg, Kirkland, Wash., Kristin Solberg-McClelland, Wasilla, Alaska, Kevin Ehrman-Solberg and Bridget Ehrman-Solberg, Minnetonka. He also is survived by many adopted sons and daughters. He was preceded in death by his parents; and by his sisters: Kay Solberg, Dagny Jacobson and Ina Peterson.
