Archbishop Hanus will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Bonaventure Church, with burial at 2 p.m. in Calvary Cemetery in Omaha, Neb. Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. today at McKown Funeral Home, Columbus, Neb., and after 6:30 p.m. at St. Bonaventure Church also in Columbus, where there will be a vigil service at 7 p.m. Friends also may call from 8-9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. She was born on Dec. 15, 1908, in Brainard, Neb., daughter of Adolf and Josephine (Ratkovec) Polak. Her early education was in Brainard, graduating from high school in 1926. She then attended business college in Grand Island, Neb. She married Leo A. Hanus on Feb. 6, 1934, in Brainard. They shared 63 years of marriage before his death on Jan. 19, 1998. They farmed in Butler and Platte counties from 1934 to 1964. They then moved to Omaha where she worked as a cook at St. Richard's School and Immanuel Hospital. In 1972, they relocated to Columbus and Kristine was a cook at Louie's Restaurant and Holiday Inn, now the New World Inn, until retirement in 1979. Kristine enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will always be remembered for her wonderful cooking and baking skills as well as her enjoyment of music, needlework, travel and the outdoors. Kristine's deep faith was reflected in her daily life, and over the years she was always involved in church activities. She was a member of St. Bonaventure Church in Columbus, the Ladies Guild and worked in the Sewing Circle. She was a 71-year member of Catholic Workman Branch 16 of Brainard. After the death of her husband, she made several visits to Dubuque and spent time with her son, the archbishop. She enjoyed getting to know the people and the places of northeastern Iowa. She visited numerous churches and towns, shared in parish anniversaries and observances, prayed with religious Sisters in the different motherhouses, and at times even played the piano in different locations. She shared her wit and her stories with many new friends, and especially enjoyed being in Dubuque for Christmas, the last time in 2005. Surviving are her four daughters, Sr. Josita Hanus, ND, of Omaha, Dorothy (John P.) Hain, of West Chester, Pa., Marilyn (Robert) Haerr, of Terre Haute, Ind., Loretta (Dennis) Masur, of Warsaw, Ind.; four sons, Alfred Hanus (Rita), of Columbus, Archbishop Jerome Hanus OSB, of Dubuque, Leo Hanus (Lorraine), of Denton, Texas, and Ernest (Robin) Hanus , of Omaha; 21 grandchildren; 36 great- grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren; and three sisters-in-law, Ludmilla Birkel, of David City, Genevieve Hanus, of Lincoln, Neb., and Sr. Marietta Hanus, SSSF, of Milwaukee, Wis. She also was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers, four sisters, a daughter-in-law and two grandsons.
