Description	:	The following obituary is from a clipping in the Audubon Newspaper in 1947: "Rites Monday For Mrs. Mathisen, 82, Came to America At Age of 19; Burial Here" "Mrs. Marie Mathisen, 82, a native of Denmark died Saturday after a three-month illness. Mrs. Mathisen came to America at 19, and settled in Audubon county. She was a member of the Danish Lutheran church. Survivors: Sons, Chris and Matt, both of Audubon; Daughters, Mrs. Anna (William) Blohm, Mrs. Mary (Henry) Blohm, Mrs. Christina (Roy)Shupe, all of Audubon. Interment was at Maple Grove." *********************************************************** Marie Hansen was born 25 Dec 1864 in Jelling, Vejle, Denmark to Kristin and Emma (Jensen) Hansen. Marie's parent's names, Kristin Hansen and Emma Jensen, are from her marriage record Ancestry.com, Iowa Select Marriages. Marie's death certifiacte states that her place of birth was Voergaard, Denmark. Voergaard Castle is a well-known Renaissance manor house with out buildings and a moat, located 10 km north of Dronninglund on the North Jutland island in north-western Denmark. A large collection of art, jewelry, china and other items can be seen there. It supposedly is haunted by a ghost of a previous owner. A builder was supposedly killed and thrown in the moat. This was one place very worthy of a visit in August 2015! Marie was orphaned before the age of 19. She came to the USA in 1884, going to Mary A. Cannibbie McComb (a relative) at Grand Junction, Iowa. But while aboard the ship coming to the USA, Marie became ill with typhoid fever. She had red hair but it began turning gray after the fever. Marie married ____Christensen who died a short time later. Then she married Jorgen Christian Mathisen on 3, Oct 1890, at Danske Evangelisk Lutherske Bethlehems Menighed, Harlan, Shelby Co., IA. Jorgen & Marie lived in Section 15, Sharon Township, Audubon County, Iowa. All 5 children were born there. Marie or "Mor" as she was called, had concerns about her children having to cross Indian Creek to and from school. Marie, Jorgen and family moved to section 30 of Leroy Township, Audubon County, in 1902. They lit real candles on the Christmas tree which was always decorated on Christmas Eve by the adults. Since Mor's birthday was on Christmas Day, rather than having a birthday cake, she preferred prune pie or prune strip. In 1920, they built a new stucco house in Audubon at 613 Tracy St. A memory of Great-granddaughter Marilyn Hansen Grabill: Marie kept a very tidy home and allowed grandchildren to play only in certain areas.
