Newstrand Funeral services were held in the Methodist Church here last Tuesday afternoon, for Latimer F. Newstrand, who passed away January 8th at his home in Okmulgee, Okla. Rev. Faris, Pastor, officiated at the service. Carsons were in charge of arrangements here and burial was made in the Dayton Cemetery. Surviving are his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Gifford Smith of Swea City, Ia., Mrs. Virgil Richey of Moline, Ill., and one son, Calvin, of Costa Mesa, California. Mr. Newstrand was well know in and around Dayton, for the Newstrand family was one of the pioneer families in this area, and its members were so well known for their achievements all over the nation. Lat, as everyone called him, started to work in the Cole Drug Store back in about 1903 or 1904, as near as we can find out, for Mr. Ed Skoglund, who had taken over from the Cole Brothers. Lat became the owner in about 1907 and operated the store until about 10 years ago. He then retired and moved to Oklahoma for his health. He had resided there since that time. Dayton Review January 21, 1960 OBITUARY Latimer Forrest Newstrand Latimer Forrest Newstrand, son of Charles and Julia Newstrand, was born on a farm near Dayton, Iowa on March 28, 1879. He was educated in the Dayton Public schools after which he graduated from the Highland Park University School of Pharmacy. After graduation he spent four years in Brainerd, Minn., returning to Dayton, Iowa where he was employed by the Cole Drug Company, which business he later purchased and operated. For 41 years Mr. Newstrand faithfully served the people of this community. On June 8, 1910, he was united in marriage to Bessie Leach at Paris, Missouri. To this union four children were born of whom one son, Richard Dean, died in infancy. In 1948, Mr. Newstrand retired from the drug business. Seeking to find a more suitable climate for retired days he moved, with his wife, to Okmulgee, Oklahoma where they have since resided. There they formed many friendships, especially in the First Methodist Church of which he was a member. About seven months ago he suffered a stroke from which he did not completely recover. He departed this earth on January 8, 1960. He leaves to mourn, his beloved wife; one son, Calvin Newstrand of Garden Grove, California, two daughters; Mrs. Gifford Smith (Doris) of Swea City, Iowa and Mrs. Virgil Richey (Mary Ann) of Moline, Illinois. Four sisters; Ruby Newstrand and Fern Newstrand of Glendale, Calif., Delia LeValley of Alhambra, Calif., and Etta Lee of Duluth, Minn.; also four grandchildren, other relatives and many friends. His parents and three sisters preceded him in death.
