HOWELL Following An Operation for appendicitis--Surrounded By Family, Mrs. Howell Passed Away Friday Afternoon The Many friends of Mrs. Nat Howell will be pained to learn that she died yesterday afternoon at 4 o'clock, at the Home Private Hospital. She was operated on last Tuesday for appendicitis, and only rallied temporarily from the operation. She had been sick since the 10th of September and it was the judgment of a number of physicians in Atchison, as well as of Dr. Herrick of Everest, a man in whom the Howell family have the greatest confidence that the only chance of life, was in an operation. Mrs. Howell wished the operation performed and felt sure that it would give her health, and her husband, after consulting with the physicians in regard to it, finally consented to the operation. She seemed to rally at the very first, but it was only temporary and before the physicians told the end was near he had sent for her children. The family were a very united one and the grief of the husband and grown children is pathetic. Mrs. Howell's maiden name was Georgeanna Greenawalt and she was born in Uniontown, Pa., June 11, 1848. She came to Kansas with her widowed mother in March, 1857, and lived in the western part of Atchison county. On June 24, 1865, she was married to Nathaniel Howell, and lived for a time on a farm near Everest, coming to Atchison some years ago, when her husband's father, the late Amos Howell, became too feeble in health to look after his business and wished this son near him. Mrs. Howell leaves beside her husband, four children, three sons and one daughter, all grown. The sons are Amos A. Howell, and Henry C. Howell, of Atchison, and William G. Howell, of Whiting, Kansas. The daughter is Mrs. Lillian V. Garrett of Everest. They were all here before their mother's death. Mrs. Howell sank into an unconscious state at 3 a.m. Friday. Short funeral services will be held at Howell home on 231 North Sixth street, to-morrow morning at 10 a.m. conducted by Rev. S. O. Borland of the South Methodist church, and directly after the body will be taken to her old home near Huron and buried in the Huron cemetery. Rev. Borland will conduct the services at Huron also. Mrs. Howell as an estimable woman and was a great worker in the South Methodist church, and was so closely and devotedly identified with her home interests, that the family who mourn her loss are almost prostrated with grief. They have the sympathy of many friends who knew and loved Mrs. Howell for her many excellent qualities.
