Calderwood were in attendance at her funeral which took place at the Presbyterian church in West Side on Tuesday afternoon. Mrs. Calderwood was a remarkable woman. She kept her keen bright mind until near the end. None knew her but to love and admire her sweet disposition and patient bearing of Iifes burdens. She and her husband were pioneers of the east side of the county arriving in 1875. Rev. Mclnneg gave a good sermon at the funeral and the music was most appropriate on the death of this much beloved christian woman. We are able to make the following sketch of her life: Lavanda R Archerd was born in Monroe township, Clermont county, Ohio, the daughter of R.H. and Nancy Simmons Archerd. She passed away Oct 16, 1927 at the age of 70 years, 10 months and 17 days. In the spring of 1864 she moved with her parents to Laurel, Marshall county, Iowa, where she taught school until the death of her mother In 1867, when she became housekeeper for her father and took care of the younger brothers and sisters, who always held her in the greatest affection and often called her sister-mother. After her fathers second marriage in 1869, she taught school again until her twenty fourth year. On Dec 31, 1871 she was united in marriage to David M. Calderwood with whom she lived happily for over fifty two years. There were born to this union four children: Rowena N. (Mrs. Peter Westrum), Essie, Seth W. and Winifred (Mrs. L.H. Lott), all of whom have preceded her to the great beyond except her son, Seth. She also leaves five grandchildren: Wayne, Dorothy, Lloyd, Imogene and Bethyl Calderwood. In 1875 Mr. and Mrs. Calderwood settled on a farm near West Side. In 1884 they again moved to Atkinson, HoIt county, Nebraska, later going to Great Bend, Kans., but in the spring of 1892 they returned to Crawford county whero she has since resided, most of the time near West Side, although for eight years she lived near Buck Grove and Denison. Grandma, as her loved ones called her, was a quiet, motherly, companionable person, greatly loved by those who knew her intimately. It was a great blow to her when she lost her two daughters, Rowena in 1916 and Winifred in 1019, but the hardest blow of all came when she lost her life companion in 1924. For the past few years she had her home with her son, Seth. In her early teens she gave her heart to Episcopal church of which she was a consistent member to the time of her death. On May 15, 1927 she was stricken with the sickness or decline which proved fatal. She was in bed for a little over five months. On last Thursday she tried to get out of bed by herself and broke her hip bone, after which her condition was only semiconscious until her death about noon on Sunday. Her going was like one sinking peacefully to sleep. She was a good mother, a good wife, a good sister and daughter. She leaves beside her son, Seth, and family to mourn her death five brothers and one half brother and sister, J.T. Archerd of Clarion, Iowa; J.B. Archerd of Fremont, NE; L.S. Archerd of Madelia, Minn.; R.H. Archerd of Idaho: E.B. Archerd of Walla Walla, Wash.: Sidney H. Archerd of Omaha, Neb., and Mrs. Mabel Brodie of Dodge Center, Minn., and numerous other relatives and friends.
