He was preceded in death by his father; a sister; an infant daughter, Maryanna Sue Martin; and a son, Kerry Lee Martin. Shorty was born Jan. 27, 1927, in Cedar County, the son of Albert and Lillian Straub Martin. Shorty attended schools in Cedar County. After serving in the Navy, Shorty worked as a mechanic and was an over-the-road truck driver, hauling livestock. He later drove as a stunt driver for Joie Chitwood Stunt Shows from 1952 to 1964. In 1963, he began working as a crane operator for what was then Deweys Wrecker & Crane, and continued to work for John's Crane Service until his retirement in 1992. Shorty married Alice Deerberg on April 27, 1958, in Tipton. The couple moved to Iowa City in 1963. He attended Faith United Church of Christ in Iowa City and was a member of Iowa City American Legion Post No. 17. Memorials may be sent to The Shorty Martin Memorial Fund.
