Description	:	LaVerne L. Bowman, 89, of Sioux City died Friday Aug. 7, 1998, at a Sioux City nursing home after a brief illness. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Augustana Lutheran Church with the Rev. Michael Last and Vicar Jim Erdman officiating. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Bethesda Cemetery at Bethesda, Iowa. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Monday with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel. Mrs. Bowman was born Dec. 7, 1908, in rural Yorktown, Iowa, the daughter of Oscar P. and Mabel (Freed) Engstrom. She attended rural school in Tarkio Township, Iowa, District 1, and graduated from Essex High School in Essex, Iowa. She married Clifford E. Bowman on Dec. 25, 1936, in Hepburn, Iowa. She attended Iowa State Teachers College Extension in 1938, and attended Morningside College for two years to receive her teaching certificate. She taught school in rural schools in Page County, Iowa, was a substitute teacher in the Sioux City school system during the 1950s and 1960s, and taught at Harriet Ballou New Hope Center until her retirement in 1972. She was a member of Augustana Lutheran Church where she had been active in various church organizations. Survivors include her husband; a son and his wife, John and Karen Bowman of Fountain Hills, Ariz.; a daughter and her husband, Gwen and John Hart of Le Mars, Iowa; five grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and a sister, Virgina Engstrom, of Clarinda, Iowa. She was preceded in death by a brother, Bertil Engstrom. Pallbearers will be Patrick Bowman, Sean Bowman, Leslie Freed, Mike Ellis, John Hart, and Jerry Carlson.
