Description	:	OSCAR PHILLIP ENGSTROM Oscar Phillip Engstrom, son of Gustaf and Christina Engstrom, was born December 2, 1881, near Cable, Henry County, Illinois. He came to Page County, Iowa, at the age of five, where the family became members of the Bethesda Lutheran Church. Here he was confirmed and remained an active member for the rest of his life. On May 29, 1907, he was married to Mabel Freed and they established their home on the farm east of Essex, Page County, Iowa, where the family home continues. Read More	OSCAR PHILLIP ENGSTROM Oscar Phillip Engstrom, son of Gustaf and Christina Engstrom, was born December 2, 1881, near Cable, Henry County, Illinois. He came to Page County, Iowa, at the age of five, where the family became members of the Bethesda Lutheran Church. Here he was confirmed and remained an active member for the rest of his life. On May 29, 1907, he was married to Mabel Freed and they established their home on the farm east of Essex, Page County, Iowa, where the family home continues. He died suddenly following surgery at the Immanuel Hospital, Omaha, Nebraska, January 23, 1966, at the age of 81 years, 1 month, and 21 days. He leaves as closest family, his wife, Mabel; his daughter La Verne and her husband Clifford Bowman of Sioux City; his daughter Virginia, at home; and his son, Bertil and his wife, Lucille, living near the family home. Also his five grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. John Hull, Mammouth, Illinois, five nieces and, a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and four sisters. Mr. and Mrs. Engstrom celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1957. His life was one of service to his family, his church, and his community. He served as a member of the Bethesda Church Council, the Churchmen, and was a member of the church choir for 70 years. His activities included many years as the township clerk, vice president of Southwest Federated REA and County ASC board. Funeral services were held from Bethesda Lutheran Church at 2 PM, January 26, 1966, with Pastor Wayne Stoutenburg officiating. Ushers were Keith Nelson, Warren Swanson, Charles Larson, and Norman Setterburg. Caring for the flowers were Mr. and Mrs. James Lundberg and Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Falk. The men's double quartet sang, "Unto the Hills" and "It is Well With My Soul." Quartet members were Gene Hagglund, Leonard Nelson, Allan Oberg, Ray Hanson, Gerhardt Palmquist, Dale Wallin, John Lind, and John Liljedahl. Organist was Mrs. Orville Swanson. Pallbearers were Virgil Freed, Leslie Freed, Wilbur Freed, Arlen Johnson, Stanley Johnson, Douglas Johnson. Interment was in Bethesda Cemetery;. Sellergren Funeral Home, Red Oak, Iowa, was in charge. Those from a distance attending the funeral services were Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Bowman and Gwen of Sioux City, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. John Bowman and Heather, Bismark, North Dakota; Mr and Mrs. Wayne Royer and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Perry of Lincoln, Nebraska; Mr. and Mrs. Ron Pigg and Darren of Council Bluffs, Iowa. Information found in The Shenandoah Evening Sentinel, Tuesday, February 1, 1966 Mr. Engstrom had served on the federal farm program committees since their beginning in 1934, being a community committee member from Feb 27, 1945, when he was elected to the county committee. He had been on the county committee for 20 years, retiring lst September. He would have received his 20-year award later this spring."
