She was born November 29, 1919 to Fred and Katherina (Katiei) Schlichtemeier Kattau in Lancaster County. She was baptized by Pastor Cholcher at St. John Lutheran Church on December 28, 1919 and confirmed May 28, 1933. She attended school at St. John Parochial School and District 11, graduating from Hallam High School in May of 1938. Read More	LaVerne Lizetta Wendelin, 77, of Crete, died Tuesday October 7, 1997 at her home. She was born November 29, 1919 to Fred and Katherina (Katiei) Schlichtemeier Kattau in Lancaster County. She was baptized by Pastor Cholcher at St. John Lutheran Church on December 28, 1919 and confirmed May 28, 1933. She attended school at St. John Parochial School and District 11, graduating from Hallam High School in May of 1938. She married Elmer Wendelin on March 6, 1940 at St. John Lutheran Church with Pastor Pebler officiating. She was a life-long resident of the area. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church and took an active role in the work of her church. She was a member of the JOY Group since it began and the Kramer FCE Club. She was a homemaker and helped her husband raise chickens. She enjoyed her garden, sewing quilts and rugs and spending time with her grandchildren. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Dale Gropp of Crete; granddaughter and husband, Julie and Jon Geiger of Cozad; grandson, Mike Gropp and Michelle Koepp of Crete; sister and brother-in-law, Annice and Herman Weidner of Culbertson; sisters-in-law, LaVerna (Kate) Kattau of Crete, Olga Kattau of Hallam, Blanche and Carl Weidner of Trenton; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Elmer in 1985; brothers, Fred, Raymond, and Dewayne and by her sister Wilhelmine. Funeral services were held October 11 at St. John Lutheran Church in Kramer with Pastor John Heckmann officiating. Organist was Jolene Reetz. Hymns were sung by the congregation: "What a Friend We Have in Jesus," "Rock of Ages," "Abide With Me," and "Abide With Me." Interment was in St. John Lutheran Cemetery. Pallbearers were Michael Gropp, Todd Wendelin, Bill Weidner, Ronald Weidner, Dennis Kattau, and Jon Geiger. Kuncl Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Memorials are to St. John Lutheran Church.
