Funeral on Thursday - Ten children Born to Mr. and Mrs. Grossman - Five of them are living in County. Funeral services were held at the St. Mary's church, Willey, Thursday morning, June 10, for Lawrence Grossman, who died suddenly Monday morning at 10 o'clock. The pall-bearers were John Krause, Bernard Grieving, Joe Grieving, Matt Schumacher, George Beyer and W. Danner. Interment was made in the family lot in the Willey cemetery. Mr. Grossman had not been sick and just before his death had enjoyed a hearty lunch. He stepped out on the porch of his home, and collapsed with an attack of apoplexy. Mr. Grossman was born in Bavaria, Germany, December 12, 1843, and came to America in 1868, coming with a large group of friends and relatives. The same year he was married in Fayette County, Iowa, to Miss Margaret Hesser, who came to America from the same neigborhood. They were married at St. Luke's church, Old Mission, November 26,1868. They farmed in Lafayette county for seven years before coming to Carroll county. A prairie schooner drawn with oxen was their means of travel to the farm in Pleasant Valley township which was the family home until Mr. Grossman retired from farming 20 years ago. Since retiring from active farm life, where he prospered and was successful, he resided in Willey. after the death of his wife six years ago, a niece, Mrs. Lawrence Beyer, who was widowed at the time of the flu, kept house for him. Mr. Grossman was a life member of the Catholic church. As a friend and neighbor he was all that could be desired and in a buiness transaction his word was as good as his bond. He was one of the influcnatial men of his community and had served Pleasant Valley as a trustee and had also been a member of the school board of Pleasnat Valley Center. As soon as he could, after coming to America, he took out his naturalization papers and became one of those true American citizens, deeply admiring and respecting his adopted country. Of the ten children born to Mr. and Mrs. Grossman, severn survive. Two children died in infancy and one son, George Grossman, died four years ago at the age of 40. The surviving children are: John Grossman, Canute, Okla.; Mrs. Frank Gute, Willey; Mrs. August Gute, Willey; Miss Farnces Grossman, Pasadena, Calif.; Joseph Grossman, Carroll; Frank Grossman, Dedham; Ben Grossman, Willey. The sudden and unexpected death of Mr. Grossman came as a great shock to the family, who have the profound sympathy of their many friends in their bereavement. Those attending the funeral from a distance were: John Grossman of Canute, Okla.; Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Balk of Wilmont, Minn.; Adam Balk of St. Kilian, Minn.; Lawrence Balk, Jr. of Mankato, Minn; and Mrs. John Rulfes, of LaMars.
