Born in Ellensburg on July 16, 1908, he was the eleventh of twelve children by Jacob and Nora Cleman, early pioneers in the Kittitas Valley. His material grandfather, John P. Sharp, and his paternal uncle, John Cleman, were both members of the first General Assembly of the House of Representatives when Washington achieved statehood in 1889. Cleman Mountain, situated between Wenas Creek and Nile Creek near Selah, is named after his grandfather, Charles Augustine Cleman, one of the first settlers in the Yakima Valley and the man who introduced the raising of sheep to that region. Lawrence attended local public schools and graduated from Ellensburg High School in 1927, after serving as class officer and starring on both the basketball and football teams. He studied law at the University of Washington where he received his LL.B. degree in 1934. After being admitted to the bar in the same year, he began his practice in Ellensburg and he joined with Albert W. Crimp in the firm of Cleman & Crimp in 1936. Both served as officers in the Ellensburg Federal Savings and Loan Association. Their offices were located in the Olympia Block on the northwest corner of 4th and Pearl Streets. Upon Crimp's retirement, he established his own practice in conjunction with attorneys John Thomas and Jay Whitfield in the Davidson Building space currently occupied by Giovanni's Restaurant. Active in municipal and civic affairs, Lawrence was elected City Attorney in 1938 and he remained in that office until 1963. He was also the attorney for the Kitttias County Public Utility District for a number of years. In the 1960's, as owner and manager of the Olympia Block (subsequently destroyed by fire), he played a significant role in efforts to revitalized the central business district. He was a member of the Washington State Bar Association, Sigma Alpha Epsilon Law Fraternity, and Ellensburg Lodge #1102 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. He retired from practice after more than fifty years of professional life. A frequent hunter in his early years and an avid fisherman through most of his life, Lawrence loved the outdoors and delighted in the beauty of the Kittitas Valley. He married Irene Davies, originally of Wild Rose, Wisconsin, in 1938 and they had two sons, Thomas and John. He is remembered as a loving husband and father, a man who was interested in other people and in new ideas, a man of extraordinary intelligence, integrity, strength, and compassion. Lawrence was preceded in death by brothers Edgar, Clarence, Herbert, Johnnie, Arthur, Harold and Ralph and by his sister Lela. He is survived by his wife, Irene of Rosemead, California, sons Thomas J. of Flagstaff, Arizona and John L. of Temple City, California; sisters Alice Bilbie of Ellensburg and Rosalie Pautzke of Santa Barbara, California, and a brother Chester of Portland, Oregon; granddaughters, Calhee Cleman of Lakewood, Colorado, Angela Cleman of Denver, Colorado, Debrah Cleman of Boise, Idaho and Rebecca Cleman of Flagstaff, Arizona, nephews Donald L. Cleman of Ellensburg, William Cleman of Brisbane, Australia and Richard Pautzke of Santa Barbara, California, nieces Harriet Burnham of Fresno, California and Joan Adams of Lynnwood, Washington; and numerous grand and great grand nieces and nephews. Services will be held Saturday, June 24 at 11 a.m. in the Steward Williams Funeral Home. The family suggests that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Kittitas County Historical Society.
