The funeral Mass will be on Thursday, June 22, 10:30 A.M. at St. Peter Catholic Church in Fullerton with Father Richard Whiteing celebrating the Mass. Interment will be in the Fullerton Cemetery with military honors by the Fullerton American Legion Post 151 Honor Guard. Lawrence was born on December 21, 1923, to Matthew and Anna (Kula) Gdowski on a farm by St. Edward, Nebraska. He attended country schools in Nance and Boone counties. He helped his parents farm and also helped his grandparents, Charles and Agatha (Czarnik) Kohler farm the homestead in Knox County which is still in the family. Lawrence in his adolescent years played baseball with his brothers on the Belgrade team which he had fond memories of. Later he enjoyed making the popcorn for the Knights of Columbus concession stand at the baseball games. Lawrence enlisted in the U.S. Navy around 1943 serving in World War II. He was stationed in Guam and the Aleutian Islands and served on the U.S. Billy Mitchell. He was honorably discharged in three years later. On July 3, 1948, he married the love of his life, Martha Swertzic, in St. Peter & Paul Church at Krakow. To this union four daughters and one son were born. Lawrence worked on the Union Pacific Railroad and Swift Meat Co. in Omaha, and for the remainder of his career he farmed near Fullerton. Lawrence was active in the American Legion, Holy Name, Knights of Columbus, Eagles, V.F.W., Sportsmen’s Club, and conservation programs. He enjoyed going with Martha to her special events with the Wall Street Extension Club. He enjoyed wood working, hunting, camping, and fishing, as well as listening to political programs, farm markets, watching westerns- especially John Wayne, and spending Saturday evenings watching Jimmy Stewart and Molly B. Lawrence loved his wife Martha for 62 years. He was very proud of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
