OBITUARY - Plain Dealer, Wabash (IN) LAWRENCE HAYES IS FIRST FATALITY OF YEAR IN COMMUNITY. Wabash County's first fatality of 1959 occurred Monday afternoon on State Road 16 northeast of Urbana as Lawrence Hayes, 45 years old, 225 West Main Street, assistant county road supervisor, was instantaly killed in a crash. Dr. L.W. Yoder, coroner, in his first inquest since he took office the first of the year, attributed death to a broken neck and possibly a basal skull fracture. The death resulted from the collision of a northbound pick-up truck of the highway department operated by Mr. Hayes and a westbound passenger auto driven by Lawrence E. Williams, 34, Urbana R.R.1, at the intersection of Road 16 and the Rock Spring Road, one mile north and six and one-half miles east of Urbana. Mr. Williams, his wife, Mrs. Marjorie Williams, 26, and their daughter, Marjorie Jean, 2, were brought by ambulance to the Wabash County Hospital for treatment. Two other children were unhurt. Mr. Williams suffered cuts and bruises on the forehead and face, Mrs. Williams sustained abrasions on the leg, bruises on the forehead and possible sprain of the left ankle. The child had cuts on the face and forehead and a fracture of the left leg. The parents were released after receiveing medical attention and the daughter stayed on as a patient. Sheriff Cecil Reynolds and State Trooper James (Whitey) D'Armond investigated. Mr. Williams told the state trooper that he did not see Hayes approaching the intersection. Mrs. Williams said she did see the county highway vehicle, noticed that it was traveling rather slowly and reasoned it would stop at the intersection inasmuch as they (the Williamses) had the right of way. The sheriff believes that Mr. Hayes apparently did not see the Williams machine - a 1937 Chevrolet - although the intersection is unobstructed. Hayes, who had been an employee of the County Highway Department since 1937 and assistant supervisor during the last five years, was on a tour of the rural area, checking with maintainence operators. He had stopped to talk with Sam Dewald east of Urbana only a short time before, and was en route into Chester Township when the acccident occurred. According to the sheriff, the westbound Williams machine evidently hit the right front of the truck. This caused the Williams auto to careen off the pavement into the ditch and hit both a utility pole and a cement cornerpost head-on. The impact threw the occupants of the car against the windshield. The Williamses live a mile west along the state road from the scene of the crash. Mr. Reynolds added that the truck went across the road two carlengths and turned over on the right side in a dry ditch. The force of the collision was so great that it knocked the two front wheels and axle from under the truck. The Williamses told the state trooper they were traveling about 40 to 45 miles per hour. Damage to the two vehicles aggregated $1,600 authorities estimated. The Hayes death is the first road fatality in the ocunty since Pierre Gaff died last Nov. 20 of injuries recieved in an accident along State Road 15 north of here. The decedent was born at Somerset, Aug. 23, 1903 to Orlando and Mary Ann (Ross) Hayes. He had resided in Wabash for about 6 years. He was a member of the Christian Church and the Elks Lodge. Survivors include two children, Mrs. John Frederick Fearnow and James Robert Hayes, Wabash; two sisters, Mrs. John Pettit, Wabash, and Mrs. Moine Roush, Wabash; and two brothers, Floyd Hayes, Red Wing, Minn. and Lloyd Hayes, Marion. Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at 10:30 o'clock in the Jones Funeral Home with Dr. Ware W. Wimberly officiating.
