Funeral services were held Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Hills. Fr. Jason Crossen officiated the services. Burial was in the St. Stanislaus Cemetery in rural Hills. A memorial fund has been established at the funeral home in memory of Leah. Leah Elizabeth Knebel was born December 18, 1917, in Hills, Iowa the daughter of George and Martha (Edle) Knebel. Leah attended St. Joseph's School in Hills thru 11th grade and then graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1935. On January 27, 1940, Leah was united in marriage to Lawrence E. Herring at the St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Hills. Leah and her husband resided on the Herring farm east of Hills all her married life and helped farm for 30 years prior to Lawrence's death on May 14, 1974. She was also employed at Unique Cleaners for many years and at the mall Dairy Queen for 18 years, retiring in 1994. She was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society at St. Joseph's church and the Red Carpet Club at the Lone Tree Bank. Leah enjoyed making quilts and afghans, doing needlepoint and her love of flowers and being outdoors. The cookie jar was never empty and her door was always open to family and friends. She will be missed by all, especially her family. Leah will be deeply missed by her children, George Herring and his fiancé, Susan Steele of Lone Tree and Mary Ann Mullinnix and her husband, Harold of Iowa City; grandchildren, Larry (Kim) Herring of Lone Tree, Lisa Barth of Edgar Springs, Missouri, Russell (Ellen) Mullinnix of Hills and Roger (Connie) Mullinnix of Iowa City; great grandchildren, Trisha Herring, John Dodkins, Adam Mullinnix, Tyler Mullinnix, Brianna Mullinnix, Nathan Mullinnix and Stephanie (Jerry) Wray; great great grandchildren, Trinity, Tristin, Alisa, Emmett and Kalvin; one brother, Leo Knebel of Hills; many nieces and nephews and her adopted granddaughter, Kris Howser and her friend, Bill. Leah was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Lawrence, four brothers, Rochus, Reno, Henry and Louis.
