Gates at West Liberty, Iowa. 3 children-1 Grandchild died in Infancy. Leah Gates, daughter of Peter and Elizabeth Gates, was born at Rose Hill, Darke County, Ohio, June 21, 1853. She came with her parents to Iowa where they settled in an early day on a farm near West Liberty. The father was a circuit minister at the time. Leah was united in marriage to Oliver C. Holloway on Jan. 1, 1874. He had served his country well in the Civil War. The new home was made on the farm southwest of West Branch, Iowa, where their three children, Myrtle, Edith and Fred grew up. Lather the family moved to the present home just south of West Branch. In 1902 Edith was married to George Yetter. She passed to the Great Beyond a few years later. Her sister Myrtle, who became Mrs. George Yetter, also passed away, leaving the brother, Fred, as caretaker of the mother after the father’s death in 1924. Two sisters, Mrs. Henry Gregg of West Branch, Iowa and Mrs. Susan Hunter, of Anthony, Kansas, also survive. For more than twenty years the deceased had been afflicted with rheumatism, being a great sufferer. Her patience during these trying years has been remarkable. She was able to do her household tasks until December just passed, since which time she has failed rapidly. She was especially interested in flowers and in household arts such as quilt and rug making, having in her home many beautiful samples from her busy fingers. Mrs. Holloway was ever thoughtful of others, willing to do anything in her power to assist a neighbor or friend. Death came to her a sweet release from suffering and in her Heavenly Home, free from pain, she reaps the reward of a well spent life. Funeral services were held at the home at 2:00 o’clock Wednesday after noon April 18, 1928, conducted by the Rev. Milo Rees. S. at that time, but the following information that we do have: On Leonard’s will 1801-mention is made of a son John (Eldest son-Brother to Adam & it was Johns duty to pay his mother a yearly sum form his inheritance as it seemed in those days the inheritance went to the oldest son and it was up to him to keep the family provided for. Pennsylvania-One of the children of Leonard & Anna Marie Getz. Adam married Margaret Barnhart-Union County Pennsylvania. Parents of 11 children: Leonard Peter John George Sally Gates Barnhardt Margaret Gates Brown Catherine Gates seemed to be a favorite sister of Peter Gates for he referred to her many times in his diary.
