Read More	Married to Elizabeth Gates Oct 7, 1821 - March 3, 1897 Blessed are they who Die in the Lord Peter Gates born 02/28/1807 in Ross County Ohio. He married Elizabeth Frank daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth Frank born in Canfield, Trumboll County, Ohio October 7, 1821 they were married on August 27, 1840. In 1865 they migrated two miles west of West Liberty, Iowa. Later his brothers John and George also moved to Iowa and located near West Liberty. Peter Gates was a circuit rider, kept a daily diary and read and reread the bible and in his diaries referred to the completing of the reading of the entire bible for the 68th time. (per Elizabeth Frank Gates obituary their circuit was 300 miles and contained 35 preaching places.) In the diaries it tells of conducting services at the North Bend Church (which still stood in 1956) near North Liberty. Peter and Elizabeth had 11 children. From The Gates Scroll given to William Henry and Susan Ann Gittins Jones’ on the 50th Wedding Anniversary 1956 In 1701 William Penn spent some time in Germany, lecturing and preaching, and during this time he extended an invitation to the Getz family to come to his newly founded colony of Pennsylvania. We do not, however, have the names of the members of the Getz family that came over the U. S. at that time, but the following information that we do have: On Leonard’s will 1801-mention is made of a son John (Eldest son-Brother to Adam & it was Johns duty to pay his mother a yearly sum form his inheritance as it seemed in those days the inheritance went to the oldest son and it was up to him to keep the family provided for. Leonard Getz born 1726 Cocalico Twsp. Lancaster Co. Pennsylvania. (His will is dated April 1, 1801 and names his wife Anna Marie Getz as administrator.) Adam Gates (Getz) Born 1767 Lancaster Co. Pennsylvania-One of the children of Leonard & Anna Marie Getz. Adam married Margaret Barnhart-Union County Pennsylvania. Parents of 11 children: Leonard "Peter" John George Sally Gates Barnhardt Margaret Gates Brown Catherine Gates seemed to be a favorite sister of Peter Gates for he referred to her many times in his diary. The had 4 children Mary Gates Larue-born 11/11/1849 Darke co, Allen twsp, Ohio married Alvin Larue. Made wool yarn wreath and presented same to Sarah Gates in 1900 now in Ivan Gates home. Sarah (Sallie) Gates-born 1/1/1848 Darke Co., Gettysburg, Ohio-married William Richard Gittins 1/18/1883 in West Liberty, Iowa- d. 4/8/1898 in Williamsburg, Iowa buried at Oak Hill cemetery. Leah Gates-Holloway-Born 6/21/1853 Darke County, Allen Twsp., Ohio m. 01/01/1879 Oliver Holloway in West Liberty, Iowa. Died ??/??/1928 Springdale, Iowa buried at West Liberty Cemetery, West Liberty, Iowa. Lived at West Branch had a Solid Walnut Dresser-brought by Peter Gates family from Ohio, now in home of Ivan N. Gates at West Liberty, Iowa. 3 children-No grandchildren Rachel Gates Gregg-Born 12/11/1854 Darke County Allen Twsp., Ohio. M. Henry Gregg 02/15/1875 Iowa City, Iowa. Died ??/??/1934 Buried at West Branch. Jacob Gates- born 07/29/1851 Darke County, Ohio. Married Betty Wilcox (no date) D. 06/09/1880 buried in Downey cemetery. No children Gideon Gates-born 07/29/1851 Darke County, Allen twsp., Ohio m. Nellie Hughes no date, no death recorded either did look but need to spend more time at it. 2 children Ezra Gates-born 07/19/1859 Darke County Allen Twsp. Ohio. M. 2/4/1855 Elizabeth (Lizzie) Hill near River Junction Johnson County. Died in 1926 Anthony, Harper County, Kansas. 3 children Susanne Hunter-born 3/12/1858 Darke County Allen Twsp. Ohio.
