In the 1900 Census for Wapello County, Iowa, Lee Henness, born Jan. 1853, was living with his wife Sarah, born Oct. 1847; their son William, age 22; and their daughter Selma, age 18. I found an obituary for a Lee Henness who died in June 1901 in Davis County, and it appears it was for this man. I have transcribed it below. Lee was married twice, both to women named Sarah. His daughter Selma's obituary named a half-brother, Charles Henness, and a half-sister, Mrs. Lou Holmes of Kenosha, Wis. Lee was first married to Sarah Allen, and Charles was their son. Mrs. Lou Holmes was Sarah's daughter by a previous marriage to John Bennett. According to records found in ancestry.com, Lee's full name was actually Joshua Lee Henness. I have not been able to find a marriage record for his marriage to Sarah Allen. The year of marriage I have entered on this memorial is approximate, based on the birth date of their son Charles. A record is found in ancestry.com for J.L. Hennis [sic] married to Sarah J. Watters [sic] on November 16, 1876, in Ottumwa, Iowa. --------------- Note: The obituary I have transcribed for Lee included the heading that it was from, "Thursday's Daily." That Thursday would have been June 13, 1901. The obituary stated that Lee died, "yesterday afternoon," so his date of death would have been June 12, 1901. In the 1900 Census for Wapello County, Iowa, Lee and his family were living on Finley Avenue in Ottumwa. Lee's three surviving children would have been his two sons, Charles and William, and his daughter, Selma. At 4:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon occured the death of Lee Henness, at his home in Soap Creek township, Davis county, five miles south and one-fourth of a mile east of Ormanville. Death was caused by cancer of the stomach. Mr. Henness was forty-eight years of age, and lived in this city for a number of years. He was employed on the Burlington railroad for nineteen years, and later had charge of a dray line in this city. He resided on Finley avenue in South Ottumwa. Last spring he moved to the country, and began farming. He leaves three children, two sons and a daughter.
