Lee Cross was the only son of Frank Cross (1860-1943) and Cornelia ("Nellie") Morton Cross (1867-1887) who wed on February 28, 1886, in Butler County, Ohio. Lee Cross was the only son of Frank Cross (1860-1943) and Cornelia ("Nellie") Morton Cross (1867-1887) who wed on February 28, 1886, in Butler County, Ohio. Cornelia ("Nellie") Cross died in Milford Township of Butler County, Ohio, at the age of nineteen on May 21, 1887, when son Lee was only five months old, and was interred there in Oxford Cemetery at Oxford, Ohio. Frank Cross soon remarried on May 31, 1889, to Letta (Ridenour) Cross; and together they raised Lee along with their own daughter, Winona N. Cross (Rupp, 1890-1980). To the best of Bruce Morton Garver's knowledge, Lee Cross always went by the name of "Lee", although at birth he was given the first name of "Leonard". * * * * * Lee (Leonard) Cross wed Kentucky-born Rhoda (Ross) Cross during 1919. Apparently, he was her second husband because the 1920 U.S. Federal Census reports that Lee Cross at the age of 33 resided with Rhoda and her daughter Florence Carroll, age 13, at 126 Warwick Avenue in Hamilton, seat of Butler County, Ohio, where Lee was employed as a molder at an iron foundry. At that time, Rhoda was employed as a "cutter" in a factory manufacturing tin cans. For information about the enlarged household of Lee and Rhoda (Ross) Cross and its members in 1930, please view the 1930 U.S. Federal Census records attached below the AERIAL PHOTO CAPTION. The 1940 U. S. Federal Census reports that Lee Cross at the age of 53 had a sixth grade education and continued to reside with Rhoda (Ross) Cross at 126 Warwick Avenue in Hamilton, where he was employed by the General Machinery Manufacturing Company. Residing with Lee and Rhoda was their thirteen-year-old son Lee Edwin Cross who had been counted as "Edwin" in the 1930 Census and also in public records after the year 1940. The Greenwood Cemetery Association confirms that Lee Cross died at the age of sixty-seven on May 30, 1954, at Hamilton, Ohio, where on June 2, 1954, he was interred at Greenwood Cemetery in Section 12, Lot 356, Grave 01. After her death on August 28, 1958, Rhoda (Ross) Cross was Interred beside Lee Cross at Greenwood in Section 12, Lot 356, Grave 02. * * * * * Bruce Garver, who created this Memorial, remembers having been introduced to Lee Cross by Emma Lotz Morton, Bruce's maternal grandmother and Lee Cross's aunt, at a Saturday "market day" around the Butler County Courthouse during the early 1950s. Perhaps Bruce never forgot this encounter because, Lee Cross has the same first name as Bruce's father, Lee William Garver (1904-1985). Bruce's sister, Ann Clifton (Garver) Bell, also recollects having been introduced on several occasions to Lee Cross during the early 1950s by her grandmother Emma Lotz Morton along Hamilton's Third Street as Ann and Emma walked between downtown Hamilton and Emma's home on 214 Charles Street. Ann Clifton (Garver) Bell recollects that Lee Cross resided at that time in an apartment building along Third Street and agrees with her brother Bruce that Lee's relationship to his Morton cousins was formally friendly but never close. * * * * * AERIAL PHOTOGRAPH of Hamilton, Ohio: In 1921 to 1922, Lee (Leonard) Cross knew Hamilton as it appeared in this aerial photograph looking north northwest across the downtown business district with the eight-story Butler County Courthouse on the left next to the 8-story Rentschler Building, at that time Hamilton's tallest commercial office building and one which still stands at the corner of High and Second streets. Through the center of this photo from left center to right center, High Street travels from west southwest to east northeast, that is to say immediately behind and parallel to the Courthouse and the Rentschler Building on the left side of the photo to a portion of the Hooven-Owens-Rentschler Company's plant on the far right. The Great Miami River and the Black St. Bridge are barely visible in the distance in a north northwesterly direction at the upper left hand corner of the photograph. Along the left side of this photograph from top to bottom, one may follow South Front Street as it goes in a south southeasterly direction and passes next to the Courthouse, Zion Lutheran Chapel, the African Methodist Episcopal Church (formerly the German Methodist Church to 1919 and Grace Methodist Church until circa 1953), and finally First Saint John's United Church of Christ (formerly Saint John's Evangelical and Reformed Church) at 412 South Front Street. Visible going from north-northwest to south-southeast from the top center to the lower right hand corner of this photo is South Second Street as it passes the Courthouse (left) and the Rentschler Building (right). Further east (and to the right), South Third Street may be seen going in the same direction and parallel to South Second Street. Bruce Garver estimates the date of this aerial photo to be in the early 1920s for three reasons. First, it depicts atop the Courthouse the new clocktower, dome, and cupola constructed circa 1915, after a large fire in 1912 had destroyed the original tower, dome, cupola, and statue of Justice atop the courthouse. Note the lighter and cleaner stone of these additions in comparison to the rest of stone exterior of the Courthouse. Three firemen perished while fighting this blaze. Second, the fairly small number of motor vehicles on the street indicates that the photo was probably made shortly after World War I and the post-war recession of 1920-21. Third, this photograph certainly predates the year 1926 when the replacement dome and cupola were destroyed by lightning and the ensuing fire. Because this damaged dome and cupola were never replaced, the circa 1915 clock tower remained alone atop the Butler County Courthouse whose appearance, in comparison to most other American county courthouses, gives one the impression of viewing a structure that remains uncompleted.
