He was born March 30,1930, in Roanoke, Va., and was the son of the late Lee Roy Sr., and Grace Katherine Shaffer Tomney of Shenandoah. He was affectionately known as /Buddy/or/Froggy./ He graduated from Shenandoah High School in 1951 and received the first community award ever given for /"The Best All-Around Athlete of the Year./". He played varsity football, baseball, and basketball during his four years in high school. He also ran track for two years. In August 1951, he was called into military service in Korea until May 1953. He received the Commendation Ribbon with Metal Pendant for Meritorious service in Korea. He was owner and operator of Tomney's Gulf Station in Shenandoah from 1957 to 1964 and operated Luray Bowling Lanes from 1958 to 1966. He was also owner and operator of T-Bowl Lanes in Shenandoah since 1964 to present time. In 1962, he was employed by the U.S. Postal Service in the Shenandoah Post Office. He was appointed Postmaster in 1968 and remained in this position until his retirement in June 1990. He was a longtime member of the Shenandoah Lions Club, the Moose Lodge and the VFW, and he served on the Industrial Commission and the Board of Directors of Sovern Bank from 1971 to 1985 and was chairman or the Board from 1985 to 1989. Other memberships include the National Association of Federal Retired Employees, the National Professional Bowler Tour and the Virginia State Professional Bowlers Tour. He also won the State Double Bowling Tournament and the National Doubles Bowling Tournament. He was also inducted into the National Bowling Congress Hall of Fame on May 1,2009. For many years he was an avid sports fan, especially the Shenandoah Indians Baseball team. He was a member of Trinity Methodist Church and had served as a trustee. He is survived by his devoted wife, Shirley Turner Tomney, whom he married Oct 19,1957. Also surviving are a son, Charles Lee/"Chuck" Tomney and his wife, Cindy; a beloved grandson, Ross Tomney. Surviving also are a sister, Betty Jane Tomney Howdyshell and husband, Charlie, of Richmond; a brother, Jack Shaffer of Luray; one nephew, Steve Howdyshell and his family of Richmond; and one uncle, Bill Shaffer and wife, Joan, of Roanoke. He had a very special in-laws, Elaine and Jerry Stillwell, Lois and Lowell Will, Millie and Wendell Turner and Fran and Billy Turner; nephews, Mike Stillwell, Edwin Will,Dave Turner, Tom Turner; and niece , Suellen Mallette. He had started dialysis in July 2003 and had participated in several research projects, one for the University of Alabama. His body now rests at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Friends may call the Tomney home any time. Services will be held at the funeral home Thursday, Feb.11,2010, at 11 a..m. with the Rev. Carrie Talbot officiating. Burial will be private at the George Comer Cemetery.
