Read More	Lee Stoutenburg, a resident of this community all his life, most of that time in Union county, S.D., passed away Saturday, October 4, time as the result of a stroke. Mr. Stoutenburg was born June 28, 1891. During World War I he saw action in the second battle of the Marne, St. Mihiel, and was wounded in the Meuse-Argonne drive, He was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Lee Stoutenburg was born on June 1958, at a Sioux Falls hospital, aged 67 years, 3 months and 6 days. He had been in failing health for some 28, 1891, at Le Mars, Iowa. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Stoutenburg, moved to Akron in 1892 before moving to their farm home six miles northwest of Akron in Union county two years later. Ten years later his family moved to the farm two miles north of Akron, where Lee lived for the rest of his life. Lee was inducted into the United States Army on October 6, 1917, to serve in World War I. He landed with the A.E.F. at Brest, France, on April 4, 1918. Serving as a Message Bearer for the 7th Infantry Bn., 3d Division, he fought in all five of the major battles that his company did. He was wounded in action during the battle of the Argonne Forest on October 16, 1918. After being removed to a field hospital, he was returned to the United States in January, 1919, and was discharged two months later. On December 28, 1923, he was united in marriage with Margaret Gassman at Alcester, S.D. To their marriage were born a daughter, Ruth, and a son, Wayne. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Order of the Purple Heart, a past Commander of Hoschler Post No. 186 of the American Legion, and a Past Master of Freedom Lodge A.F. & A.M. of Akron. Lee served as township clerk, member of the local school board, and was interested and active in other community activities. He was a director of the Farmers Co-Operative, of Akron, the Union County Electric Co-Op, the Union County Soil Conservation Service, and the F.H.A. He supported both the State and County Crop and Livestock improvement programs. His family and his friends will remember him for his earnest devotion to his country and his community and for his readiness to help in any time of need. Surviving are his wife, Margaret: his son, Wayne, of Moline, Ill; his daughter, Ruth, of Akron; two grandchildren, and two sisters, Miss Eva Stoutenburg, of Riverside, Calif., and Mrs. Besse Lias, of Akron. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Lewison Funeral Home, Rev. David Roy and Rev. Chester Guinn officiating. Mrs. Victor Clark was soloist and Mrs. Henry Fickbohm was accompanist. Pallbearers were Louis Sprenger, Jr., Clifford McMurray, Chris Lucht, Darwin Johnson, Ray Ericson and Roy Nielsen. Honorary pallbearers were Andrew Bredall, Louis Sprenger, Sr., John Frisk, Albert Waterbury, William Manning, Clarence Kjose, Rollo Baker and Eugene Lias. Burial was in the Union Creek cemetery, graveside services being conducted by members of Hoschler Post, American Legion. Funeral services for Lee Stoutenburg, 67, a lifelong resident of Union county, S,D. who died at a Sioux Falls hospital Saturday, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Lewison funeral home, Akron. Rev. Chester Guinn and Rev. David Roy will officiate and burial will be in the Union Creek Lutheran cemetery near Akron The Hoeschler post American Legion, will conduct grave side services.
