In 1850 Henry Taubman established in Maquoketa the pioneer merchant tailor and clothing business. By his ceaseless activity, his tireless energy, his patient industry, he gained for himself a comfortable competency, which by his strict integrity, his readiness to uphold his views upon any subject, his unswerving fearlessness in the discharge of his duties as a citizen, he gained the respet of the community in which he lived so long. From his father, Lee Taubman inherited those qualities of mind and heart which fitted him pre-eminently for a successful business career. Here in Maquoketa, Mr. Taubman grew to manhood; here he learned those business maxims and principles that have been his guiding star during his whole career; here he made those friendships and received those impressions that have bound him with "hooks of steel" to his native town; here he wooed and won his charming wife, nee Miss Carrie B. WIlder, to whom he was married February 15, 1879. On September 2, 1885, Mr. Taubman bade adieu to all these pleasant scenes and associations and started for Los Angeles, California, where he arrived eight days later. He visited San Bernardino, San Jose, Napa, and San Francisco, finally landing in Eureka where he remained for three years. Having a strong desire to see the Hawaiian Islands, Mr. Taubman and family embarked on the sailing vessel "Allan A" and in fifteen days landed in Honolulu, the beautiful captial of the Hawaiian group. While in Honolulu, Mr. Taubman visited that most celebrated volcano, Kilauea, which is in the island of Hawaii, the largest island of the group. He attended the funeral of the late King Kalakaua, and by special invitation of Her Imperial Majesty Queen Liliuokaiani, he attended the last and only grand ball ever given by that unfortunate sovereign, for she was shortly afterwards dethroned. After a delightful two years' residence in this tropical city, Mr. Taubman and family took passage on the steamer Australia for California, locating in the thriving town of Ferndale, Humboldt county, where he has established a paying business in his chosen field. Mr. Taubman has one of the finest private residences in the town where he is now an honored and most highly respected citizen. The old adage, "A rolling stone gathers no moss," is not exemplified in Mr. Taubman's case at least, for his moves have always been profitable. Mr. and Mr. Taubman have three children - all boys - Henry L., Charles F., and Merton H. In all his travels, whether in California the land of sunshine and flowers, or crossing the Pacific ocean to bask under the Italian skies of Hawaii, Mr. Taubman says that his heart has ever been true to the home of his childhood. Often in his hours of reverie does his mind revert to the dear old place. Transported on the wings of imagination he views the old town of Maquoketa with her maple lined streets, the old school house on the hill, and a host of equally enchanting objects. Never while memory lasts, will he forget the dear old friends, the hallowed associations of his native place.
