Taubman, brief notice of which was made last week, this vicinity loses another of the pioneer residents, one of the few who braved the hardships of the early days of the county to help make this section the wonderful place it is today. He came to this county in the early part of 1876, and continued to make this place his home up until the time of his death. A few weeks ago his health became such that he went to the hospital for examination and treatments. His condition improved somewhat and he went to the home of his daughter, Mrs. Kimm at Pierson, where he was cared for. Mrs. Taubman at the time being unable to wait upon him, and later died while he was in the hospital. Thomas Edward Taubman was nearing his seventy-fifth birthday when he passed away at Pierson, on June 12, 1929. He was born at Maquoketa, Jackson county, on August 1, 1854, the eldest son of Henry and Malva Taubman. He grew to manhood in the town of his birth learning there the trade of shoemaker and harness maker. In 1876 he embarked on the stream of westward emigration coming in the typical covered wagon to a farm 5 3-4 miles northeast of the site of the present town of Schaller, which was then open prairie. The nearest post office was Storm Lake, to be reached by wagon trail across the open country, the intervening streams spanned by infrequent bridges. Nine years later, on March 31st, 1885, he was married at Epworth, to Annabelle Story and brought his bride to the home farm where they lived until December 1906 when they moved into the town of Schaller. Of five children born to this union three sons died in infancy and two daughters, Mrs. Merrill Thorpe of Lake View and Mrs. Silas Kimm of Pierson remain to mourn the loss of both their parents within a few weeks. Of his immediate family, two brothers are living, W. H. Taubman of Ukiah, Calif., and Linn Taubman of Willow Springs, Mo. Mr. Taubman was a member of the Masonic fraternity from May, 1892, until the time of his death. So pass the pioneers. For more than half a century Mr. Taubman was a part of this community and helped to make the state and community what it is. "Their works live after them." Those attending the funeral from out of town were Mrs. F. F. Parker, Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Moeller and daughter Eula of Decatur, Nebr., Mrs. Doris Parker of Walthill, Nebr.; Mr. and Mrs. James Drake and Miss Sadie Drake of Holstein; Mrs. James Farquhar, Mrs. Alec Farquhar and daughter Celeste, Sutherland; Mr. and Mrs. S. E. Harris of Peterson; Mr. and Mrs. Lincoln Gurney of Alta; Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Adams and son Gerald, Frank Christianson and Mrs. C. Armegost of Nemaha and G. P. McGrans of Pierson.
