Uhlenhopp in Allison, Iowa. The Uhlenhopps had the same address in Aplington for 50 years and were married for 70 years. (Walters) Uhlenhopp was born on Thursday; October 2, 1913, in Butler County, near Aplington, Iowa. She was the daughter of: Henry and Lena (Brinkman) Walters. Lela received her education from the Aplington School. On March 12, 1935, Lela was united in marriage with Henry R. Uhlenhopp in Allison, Iowa. The Uhlenhopps had the same address in Aplington for 50 years and were married for 70 years. Lela mostly concentrated on raising her children and being a homemaker, though she did hire out to people who needed a helping hand to clean their home. Happiest when busy and accomplishing something together, Lela and Henry raised a big garden in the summer and preserved its produce. Through the years Lela attended the Aplington Baptist Church and attended the Hitesville Gospel Hall in Aplington with Henry. She enjoyed cooking and baking for her family, especially homemade bread and cinnamon rolls for the kids after school and made excellent applesauce, fried chicken and rabbit. She liked being outside whether she was gardening or just tending to her flowers. Lela was a very energetic lady and mowed their lawn with a push mower for many years. She often enjoyed tea and cookies with friends and family. The couple loved to take their family camping on many weekends before they retired and spent much more time camping together in their retirement years. Lela D. (Walters) Uhlenhopp, age 96, passed away on Monday; November 23, 2009 at the Maple Manor Village in Aplington, Iowa from natural causes. Those left to mourn her passing are: Her three sons, Melvin (Myrna) Uhlenhopp of Ackley, Iowa, Merle (Norrell) Uhlenhopp of Aplington, Iowa, and Donald (Lois) Uhlenhopp of Aplington, Iowa; three daughters, June (Clarence) Karsjens of Parkersburg, Iowa, Sharon (Marlin) Pruin of Aplington, Iowa, and Joyce Miller of Ackley, Iowa; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandson; two sisters, Evelyn DeVries of Aplington, Iowa, and Merna Koppendryer of Aplington, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews. Lela was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Uhlenhopp on May 2, 2005; a grandson, Lee Uhlenhopp; three brothers, Walter, Richard and Henry Walters; and four sisters, Gertrude Sealmen, Swanetta Heafner, Wilma Reinecke and Doris Druvenga. May they rest in peace. Visitation will be from: 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Friday; November 27, 2009 at the funeral home and one hour before services at the church. Funeral Services will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday; November 24, 2009 at the Christian Reformed Church in Parkersburg; Butler County, Iowa. Interment will be at the Pleasant View Cemetery in Aplington, Iowa.
