Ireland Hazen was born September 22, 1904 at rural Chester, NE, and passed away on July 12, 1998 at the Republic County Hospital, Belleville, KS, at the age of 93 years, 9 months and 20 days. Lela received her education in the public schools and graduated from Chester High School in 1923. She was united in marriage to Clay A. Davenport on April 2, 1925 and to this union two sons, Glenn and Melvin and twin daughters, Jean and Joan were born. She taught schools in Purdum, NE, for two years.... Lela was a homemaker and life long resident of the Chester community. She was a life long and very active member of the Church of Christ, Chester, the Hubbell XX Club and a 4-H leader. Lela was preceded in death by her parents, William and Effie Hazen; husband, Clay A. Davenport; four brothers, Leo, Lloyd, Fay, and Audrey and two sisters, Ruth and Floy. She is survived by two sons, Glenn Davenport and his wife Doris, Chester, and Melvin Davenport and his wife Wanda, Concordia, KS; two daughters, Jean Crouse and her husband Wilbert, Chester, and Joan Crouse and her husband John, Topeka, KS; 18 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Ruth Ann Davenport, Plattsmouth, NE, and Lura Clausen, Stromsburg, NE; other relatives and many friends. Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 15, 1998, eleven o'clock a.m. at the Community Bible Church, Chester, conducted by Pastor Ray Berry. Soloist was Glen Dake, and accompanist, Mrs. Carla Berry, music was by the congregation. Casket bearers were Warren Crouse, Dwaine Bailey, Harlan Davenport, John Dean Crouse, Ric Jung, Darren Davenport, Paul A. Crouse and Lynn Crouse. Honorary casket bearers Billy Joe Strand, Gary Davenport, Scot Crouse, Philip Crouse, David Crouse, Richard Musgrave, Joel Davenport, Kent Crouse, James Crouse, and Kevin Singer. Interment was made at the Chester Cemetery, Chester, NE. Memorials may be given to the Community Bible Church, Chester, NE. Bachelor-Faulkner-Dart-Surber Funeral Home, Chester, was in charge of the arrangements.
