Davenport, son of James Jonce and Cynthia Ann (Duncan) Davenport, was born in Graham County, Kansas, August 27, 1899, and died August 13, 1979, at Republic County Hospital, Belleville, Kansas, at the age of 79 years, 11 months and 16 days. As a young man he received Jesus Christ as his personal saviour and Lord of his life. He was an active member and Elder Emeritus of the Church of Christ in Chester. Davenport, son of James Jonce and Cynthia Ann (Duncan) Davenport, was born in Graham County, Kansas, August 27, 1899, and died August 13, 1979, at Republic County Hospital, Belleville, Kansas, at the age of 79 years, 11 months and 16 days. As a young man he received Jesus Christ as his personal saviour and Lord of his life. He was an active member and Elder Emeritus of the Church of Christ in Chester. He taught Sunday School for many years. On April 2, 1925, he was united in marriage with Lela Hazen at Broken Bow, Nebraska. Most of Clay's life was spent in the Chester community as a farmer. He was a member of the Masons and the I.O.O.F. He was a 4-H leader and member of the Chester Community Club for several years. Also active for many years in Boy Scouts, Clay was Scoutmaster of Chester's Troop No. 308. In 1956 he received the "Midwest Good Neighbor Award" from KFAB. Preceding him in death were his father and mother, 3 brothers and 2 sisters. Survivors are his wife, Lela; his sons, Glenn of Chester and Melvin of Concordia, Ks.; twin daughters, Mrs. Wilbert (Jean) and Mrs. John (Joan) Crouse of Chester; brothers, Frank of Lincoln, and Fred of Plattsmouth; sisters, Mrs. Elmer (Helen) Kauer and Mrs. Everett (Lura) Clausen of Chester; 18 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and a host of relatives and friends. Memorial services were held at the Church of Christ in Chester with Pastor Lacey Joiner officiating. Glen Dake sang, accompanied at the organ by Mrs. Frieda Truss. Pallbearers were grandsons, Rich Musgrave, Dwaine Bailey, Harlan Davenport, Warren Crouse, Lynn Crouse, Dean Crouse, and Scot Crouse. Interment was in the Chester Cemetery, Bachelor-Faulkner-Dart Funeral Service in charge of arrangements.
