Leland Keith Bunting, son of William Newton Bunting and Mary Beery Bunting, was born on August 15, 1914, at Shambaugh, Iowa. He attended school at Amity in College Springs, Iowa, with the exception of one year in Clarinda and college at Findlay, Ohio. On august 8, 1942, he was united in marriage to Bonnie May Taylor at the First Church of God in Shambaugh, Iowa, by Reverend J.W. Cabbage. He became postmaster of Shambaugh in 1953 and served for 33 years. When the church burned in 1955, he was active in rebuilding the church that stands on the same site today. His handiwork can be seen from the kitchen to the ceiling lights in the sanctuary. He was a Sunday School teacher and elder of the church. He was a scoutmaster for several years and also a gunsmith. Leland was secretary of Butler Cemetery Association for several years. He was a Mason and was Past High Priest of Royal Arch and also Illustrious Master of the Council at Shenandoah, Iowa. Leland served in World War II as a First Lieutenant in "C" Company 22nd Reg. Fourth Infantry Division. He was wounded in Normandy, France, and spent three months in the hospital at Malvern Wells, England, and nine months at O'Rielly General Hospital in Springfield, Missouri. He was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star in June 1989. . Leland was a family man and having his family around him brought him great happiness. . He is survived by his wife, Bonnie of the home, a son, Charles Bunting and his wife Debra of Shambaough, Iowa, a daughter, Janice Goettsche of Elkhorn, Iowa, five grandchildren, four great grandchildren, a host of other relatives and friends. Preceding him in death were his parents, infant sister, Lucille and a brother, Truman Bunting. Published in The Clarinda (IA) Herald-Journal, November__, 2000.
