She was baptized as Lena Marjorie Hobbs. Her parents were John and Race Hobbs, whose parents were among the early settlers in that area. Lena was born September 30, 1918, on her parents' farm near Oketo, Marshall County, Kansas. She was baptized as Lena Marjorie Hobbs. Her parents were John and Race Hobbs, whose parents were among the early settlers in that area. Lena was named for her maternal grandmother, Helena "Lena" Saathoff. As a girl, Lena loved to listen to her paternal grandmother, Elizabeth Hobbs, tell stories of homesteading. Lena attended Sunrise School, where her favorite teacher was her aunt, Myra Saathoff. In 1930, when Lena was 11 years old, the Great Depression was setting in and her parents could not make their mortgage payments and lost their farm. Lena lived with her Aunt Myra and her cousins until she finished school that year, then joined her parents and older brother, Elton, in Marysville, Kansas. She always remained very close to her aunt and cousins, Lucille Saathoff and Maxine Cumro. After graduating from Marysville High School, Lena worked as a telephone operator. In 1941, she married Wallace Kracht, whose parents farmed near Herkimer, Kansas. Lena and Wally lived in Herkimer, where Wally managed a grain and feed store. Wally was drafted into the army in late 1942, and their son, Robert, was born four months later. Wally spent World War II in the Pacific. He earned the Combat Infantryman's Badge in the battle of Saipan and was killed in action during the battle of Okinawa. Lena and Robert then lived with her parents in Marysville, and Lena worked in the Marysville 5-and-10. Lena later recalled that, at that time, she had dealt with her grief by taking a long walk every day and looking for something beautiful. In 1948, Lena married Clarence Cherny, who had grown up on farms in the Winifred, Kansas, area; he served as an Army ambulance driver and motor-pool sergeant during WWII. They moved to Beatrice where Clarence first worked as a machinist at Dempster's. Their son, Darrell, was born in 1949. Clarence also adopted Robert. Later Clarence worked as an electrician for George Barber and then as a stationary engineer at the Beatrice State Home. After Darrell left home, Lena worked at what is now Pamida, where she managed the dry-goods department. Clarence died in 1987. Lena had joined the Evangelical and Reformed Church in Marysville, where she taught vacation bible school. In Beatrice the family belonged to the First Presbyterian Church, where Clarence served as a deacon and Lena taught Sunday School. She remained active in the church until leaving Beatrice, and especially enjoyed her Sunday School class of senior women. Lena served as a den mother twice, once when each of her sons was in Cub Scouts. In her 80s, Lena acquired a computer and began to use e-mail and later Facebook. She was a voracious reader, and, most recently, especially enjoyed mysteries in which senior women solved crimes. In 2008, almost 90 years old, Lena moved to The Villa at Flowing Springs and enjoyed living there, especially playing cards twice a week with other residents. Her favorite card game was gin rummy and she often won. In 2012 her eyesight diminished to the point where she could no longer drive or handle her financial affairs, so she moved to San Francisco to be near Robert and his family. After suffering two broken hips and further diminution of her eyesight, she moved to Alma Via, an assisted living facility in San Francisco, where she lived until her death on December 14, 2016. Lena was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, her first husband, Wallace Kracht, her second husband, Clarence Cherny, and her great-granddaughter, Kimberlie Melson. She is survived by her son, Robert and his wife Rebecca, San Francisco, California, and her son Darrell and his wife Sandra, Chester, Virginia; by her grandchildren, Sarah Cherny, San Francisco; Tressa Melson, Prince George, Virginia; and Tony Cherny, North Prince George, Virginia; by five great grandchildren: Cerys and Sabina Cherny, daughters of Sarah Cherny; Kelsie and Jacob Melson, daughter and son of Tressa and Kennith Melson; and Loralai Cherny, daughter of Tony and Tracey Cherny; by her nieces, Kirstin Peterson of Edgewood, New Mexico, and Norma Hartman of Omaha, Nebraska; and by her cousins, Helen Saathoff of Lincoln, Nebraska, Ida Hagaman of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, and Rose Marie Waggener of Knoxville, Tennessee. There will be a memorial service on Tuesday, December 20, at 2:30, at Alma Via, 1 Thomas More Way, San Francisco. A service will also be held in Beatrice, Nebraska, in the spring, preceding interment in Evergreen Home Cemetery, Beatrice.
