Jones, Notified He was Casualty in Leyte Battle Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Jones of Gilbert township received the sad news Friday that their son, Pfc. Clement Jones, had been killed in action. The message stated that Pfc. Jones had lost his life in the fighting on Leyte, On October 21. Pfc. Jones entered the army at Fort Lewis Wash. At the time of his enlistment he was employed as a forman at the Booth Fisherie at Bremerton. He was born and reared in Gilbert township, and received his education in the schools there. He was 31 years old in August. Pfc. Jones was in the infantry division, and took part in the invasion of Saipan. Later he was sent to a rest camp in New Guinea, where he remained three months. The family last heard from him through a letter written September 27, while he was still at rest camp. Survivors are his parents, his little son, Darrell, who is 'c'aking his home with his grandparents, one sister, Mrs. Eugene (Melvina) Hulbert, and two brothers, Leslie and Maurice Jones. Service Organizations To Attend. Memorial services for Pfc. Leo Clement Jones, who was killed in action October 21, 1944 on Leyte Island, will be held at the St. Lawrence Community church Monday, December 18, at 2;30 p.m. ADD JONES Rev. N.A. Luke will have charge of the services, which will be attended by members of the American Legion of both St. Lawrence and Miller, and the V.F.W., who will have a part in the memorial rites. Clement was born in Hand county August 26, 1913 to Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Jones of St. lawrence. He attended school at Beulah School in Gilbert township. He then assisted his father in farming until he was married in the spring of 1936 to Joyce Sorenson. They moved to Chelan Falls, Wash., where Clement worked as boss in an apple drying factory. To this union was born one son Darrel Clement, who lives with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Jones. He moved to Bremeton, Wash., and worked in Boeing's Aircraft Co. He worked in Booth's Fishery in Seattle until called to the service in December of 1942, being inducted at Ft. Lewis, Wash., from there sent to Camp Taccoa, Ga. As a paratrooper. While making his first jump 200 feet he was injured so was transferred to Ft. Brady, Mich., where he was put in the 131st infantry, Co.G. From there he was sent to Ft. Ord., Calif., from where he went overseas in January, 1944. He took part in the Saipan invasion, after which he was sent to a rest camp in New Guinea, where he stayed until the invasion of the Phillippines. The last letter the family received from him was written on September 27 of this year. Surviving his passing are his parents, one son Darrel, one sister, Mrs. Eugene (Melvina) Hurlbut, who is living at home, two brothers Leslie of Spokane, Wash., and Maurice of St. Lawrence.
