Leo attended McKelvey, a one-room school. His favorite teachers were Grace (Struckmeyer) O'Neal and Elizabeth Thompson. In 1928 he moved with his parents to Holyoke and attended Holyoke Grade School and Phillips County High School, graduating in 1935. After graduation Leo worked various jobs in Holyoke including clerking at J.C. Penney and plant metering for the ASCS office. As a hobby, Leo enjoyed photography, developing his own photographs. He was also an avid card player and remained so his entire life. In April 1941, Leo began active duty in the Army Medical Corps, 204th General Hospital at Fort Bliss, El Paso, Texas. He trained as a surgical technician and as an X-ray technician, served in Hawaii and Guam and was discharged August 2, 1945. Leo returned to Holyoke and began farming. On May 14, 1946 he married Marie Ortner of Holyoke at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Together they reared their family and farmed southwest of Holyoke. Leo was a man of firm commitment who served on the school board, was a director of First National Bank, member of Phillips County Planning Commission, a director on the Paoli CoOpp Board and served numerous terms as an ASCS community committeeman. Leo was also a 4-H leader. Leo and Marie enjoyed traveling to Thailand, Australia, New Zealand and Western Samoa to visit family. A life-long member of the National Catholic Rural Life Conference, he held firmly to the belief of the organization that "the farm is the natural habitat of the family." The values of his faith, a commitment to stewardship of the land and education for all children were the guiding principles of his life. Preceding Leo in death were parents Henry and Mary Agusta; brother Fred; sister Helen; niece Betty Francis; infant daughter Mary Ann; infant son William; and his beloved granddaughter Erin. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Marie and their six children Jim (Marlene) of Australia, Bob (Rita) of Denver, Joan of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Paul (Teresa) of Holyoke, Mike of Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Leo of Holyoke; 10 grandchildren; and two great granddaughters. Rosary and Vigil were Sunday, October 7 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Mass of the Christian Burial was Monday, October 8 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Interment followed at Holyoke Memorial Park. Gerk Funeral Home was entrusted with arrangements
