The service will take place 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2015, at the First Christian Church in Ottawa followed by a private graveside service in Concordia. Leola was born to Edwin and Frances Nelson in Concordia, Kansas, Nov. 19, 1925, the third of seven children. On March 21, 1948, Leola married Howard in Concordia, Kansas at the Baptist Church. They built a wonderful life together in Ottawa and had three children, Ronald Doyen, Ginger Doyen Cheever, and Nancy Doyen Watts. The family enjoyed vacations to Minnesota and loved their farm where they had picnics and fished in the Chippewa Hills. Leola remained dedicated to her faith throughout her life and was an active member for more than half a century at the First Christian Church in Ottawa. A favorite event was the Christmas Eve Candlelight Service. Leola enjoyed playing the piano and was a talented seamstress. She lived in the same home for 60 years and developed close connections with neighbors. She took regular walks around her neighborhood and loved to cook, recently passing her famous “Swedish roll” recipe on to grandchildren. She was also a Kansas City Royals fan and avid sports-watcher, especially KU Basketball, often knowing more about the games than her male family members. She also enjoyed Ron’s baseball games where Howard was the coach. She never missed a birthday or special occasion, always remembering to send cards to close and extended family. She was the matriarch of the family, ensuring that everyone was cared for and connected. She was a very thoughtful, giving, and grateful woman with an adorable laugh and a great sense of humor. She was a lesson to everyone what love looks and feels like. She is dearly missed by her family and many loved ones. Just a few weeks before she passed, Leola celebrated her 90th birthday surrounded by family. They enjoyed plenty of laughter together on a train ride through Kansas. These happy memories and the legacy of her life will be cherished by her family forever. Leola is survived by her three children and their spouses (Rick and Keith); four grandchildren and their spouses (Ethan and Lora, Cole and Erin, April and Patrick, and Dylan); and two great-grandchildren (Paisley and Jagger) living in Kansas and Idaho.
