Arrangements were under the direction of Iverson-Siecke Funeral Home in Vermillion. Leon MacArthur Stewart was born Jan. 27, 1924, in Stratford, S.D., to Irene and Fay Stewart. Read More	Vermillion - Leon "Jack" Stewart, 83, of Vermillion passed from this world Sunday, Feb. 25, 2007, at his residence. Arrangements were under the direction of Iverson-Siecke Funeral Home in Vermillion. Leon MacArthur Stewart was born Jan. 27, 1924, in Stratford, S.D., to Irene and Fay Stewart. He was brought into his world and left this world in either a blizzard or with snow on the ground. He was such a youthful and spirited child that he was penned with the nickname "Happy Jack," and it stuck for the entirety of his life. In 1943, at the age of 19, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he operated heavy equipment in the Navy Supply Depot on the Admiralty Islands. Two years later, he re-enlisted in Flight Training School and served his country fighting in World War II. Upon his discharge from the USN in 1946, he went back to where his heart laid true in South Dakota, where he remained until his passing. He used his war money checks to start a long career of being a self-employed businessman in Vermillion. He was loyal to Vermillion. He was a member of Vermillion Chamber of Commerce for 60 years and Trinity Lutheran Church. His blessed life is being celebrated with wonderful memories by his wife of 60 years, Glennis Hood Stewart; daughters, Linda and Thomas Van-Bruggen of Wadena, Minn., Mary Stewart of Denver, Colo., and Julie Stewart and Kevin Bliss of Vermillion; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and sisters Sharon Bates of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Bunny Fluke Scherf of Aberdeen, S.D. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to the Vermillion Senior Citizens, Vermillion Hospice and Trinity Lutheran Church. Published in the Aberdeen News on 3/10/2007.
