She quietly passed away on October 22, 2004, reaching the age of eighty-eight years. Mother spent most of her childhood and young adult years in the Montezuma-Copeland, Kansas area. In her youth, Mother was converted; Min. Hiram Mininger baptized her into the Church of God in Christ Mennonite on May 16, 1934. Her Christian life was real to her, and heaven was her goal. Though there were difficulties along the way, she was faithful to the end. On February 24, 1946, Min. Ed Frank joined Mother in marriage to our father, Harry Spence, at Copeland, Kansas. They made their home in the Winton, California area for the next six years and farmed for a living. The first three children, Geraldine, Doris, and Kathy were born there. In 1952, folks moved to Glenn, California. Here the two younger children, David and Janice were born. In 1962, Father was taken from us in a farm accident, leaving Mother to care for us five children. A number of years later the youngest of our family, Gena, came into our home as a ten-month old baby, bringing much joy to our home. Mother was a generous person and enjoyed giving. She loved her home and endeavored to make it attractive. She loved to visit, and her home was always open to family and friends. Mother worked hard and cared well for us children. Her source of inspiration was reading the Bible and singing from the Hymnal. Her prayers reflected her love for her children and grandchildren. Those left to cherish many memories are five daughters: Geraldine and husband, James Eck, Glenn, California; Doris and husband Harry Giesbrecht, Glenn, California; Katherine Spence, Hutchinson, Kansas; Janice and husband Donald Schmidt, Eureka, Kansas; and Gena and husband, Byron Wedell, Gentry, Arkansas; one son, David and wife Mary, Glenn, California; one son-in-law, Merlin Giesbrecht, Othello, Washington; Fourteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; two brothers: Emil Nightengale and wife Lorena, Montezuma, Kansas; Ervin Nightengale and wife Juanita, Scott City, Kansas; five sisters-in-law: Bernice Nightengale, Ingalls, Kansas; Susan Spence, Glenn, California; Agnes Loewen, Sun City, Arizona; Mary Griesbrecht, Glenn, California; and Alice Loewen, Montezuma, Kansas; one brother-in-law Walter Ensz and wife Mable, Louisville, Georgia; and all her special nephews, nieces and friends. Her husband, her parents, two brothers, two sisters and an infant sister preceded her in death. Funeral services were held on October 27, 2004, at the Glenn Mennonite Church, Glenn, California. Officiating ministers were Les Amoth, Robert Koehn and Ray Frank. Interment was in the Willows Cemetery.
