Year: 1930; Census Place: Fremont, Butler, Iowa ---------------------------- Leonard Frederick (Lennie) Deike, 81, of Waverly, Iowa, died on Monday evening, February 23, 2009, at the Waverly Health Center in Waverly, Iowa, due to heart and lung complications. He was born on August 22, 1927, rural Plainfield, Iowa, the son of Hugo and Hertha (Schmadeke) Deike. He graduated from Plainfield High School in 1945 and from Davis Electronics School in 1946. Leonard then worked for various electrical companies in Waverly. On August 29, 1948, he married Jeannine Price at Trinity United Methodist Church in Waverly. To this union were born three children, Vicky Jeanne, Nancy Jo and Steven Leonard. After their marriage, Leonard and Jeannie moved to Pierre, South Dakota, where he was employed as a federal electrical inspector. The couple returned to Iowa in 1952. Leonard started Deike Electric and also farmed west of Plainfield. He retired from his electrical business in 1978 and from farming in 1991. Leonard was baptized and confirmed at Pleasant Valley Church, where he was a member for many years. On April 5, 1991, he married Lois Folkerts at Pleasant Valley Church of Christ, Clarksville. Following marriage, they made their home in Waverly and Leonard became a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church. Leonard enjoyed flying airplanes, boating, fishing and traveling. He especially enjoyed taking many caravans of motor homes through Mexico. He served on local boards, was a member of the Kiwanis Club and enjoyed the Walk and Talk Group. In retirement he pursued his hobby of collecting and refurbishing toy steam engines. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jeannine on February 21, 1989; a sister, Lavon; a brother, Richard; and his parents. Leonard is survived by his wife, Lois of Waverly; three children and their spouses, Vicky (Bernie) Bossom of Streator, Illinois; Nancy (Larry) Laursen of Ankeny; Steve (Denise) Deike of Hampton; 2 stepsons and spouses; Gary (Beverly) Folkerts of Clarksville; Craig (Francine) Folkerts of Waverly; 5 grandchildren, Keith Laursen, Justin Bossom, Amanda Gonsalves, Cole Deike and Brooke Deike; 3 step-grandchildren, Zach Folkerts, Teah Folkerts and Shane Folkerts; 4 great grandchildren, Frances, Braidon, Eleanor and Maggie Mae; 2 step-great grandchildren, Alexandra and Brittany; and 2 sisters; Doris Groen and Norma Bienemann both of Shell Rock. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 26, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church in Waverly, with Pastor Nancy Schultz officiating. Burial will be at Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Clarksville. Public visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 25th from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly and also for an hour prior to services on Thursday at the church. Memorials may be directed to the family where a memorial fund will be established at a later date.
