Hausmann, son of Joseph P. and Anna (Sondgeroth) Hausmann was born May 28, 1920 on the family farm near Bonesteel, S.D. He attended Bonesteel Parochial School until eighth grade. He worked for area farmers until World War II, when he lost a coin toss with his twin brother, Ray. He then had to stay home and work on the family farm while his older brothers along with Ray went to war. He was united in marriage to Frances “Fran” Zimmerle on December 9, 1942 at Casselton, N.D. They began farming near Arthur, N.D. In 1947, they purchased a farm south of Ellendale where they raised small grains and livestock. While farming, he also worked doing light construction and handyman work. He was able to fix small and large appliances and often went on house calls. In the early 1960's, he purchased Gamble's Hardware Store in Ellendale, also owning the Maytag franchise. He always joked; he was the “lonely Maytag repairman." In 1963, he retired from farming and they moved into Ellendale. In 1972, they moved to Denver where he worked as a small appliance repairman at Hale Electric, until the age of 79. They moved to Aberdeen in 2003. He entered ManorCare in July of 2007. His wife died Feb. 10, 2009. Leonard was known for his wit and sense of humor. He could strike up a conversation with someone wherever he went. In his younger years, he enjoyed golfing and watching Minnesota Twins baseball. After moving to Colorado, he became an avid fan of the Denver Broncos and the Colorado Rockies. Some of his best memories were of the Broncos games he attended at Mile High Stadium. He also liked to read and watch television. His favorites were westerns and “Everybody Loves Raymond." He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church at Aberdeen and a former member of St. Helena's Catholic Church at Ellendale. Survivors include three daughters: Connie (Floyd) Fiechtner of Pearl River, La., Vikki (Kevin) Kendall of Warner, S.D. and Debbie (Cliff) Dahl of Sydney, Montana; three brothers: Don Hausmann and Bob (Coreen) Hausmann, both of Bonesteel, and Harry (Sharon) Hausmann of Denver, Colo.; one sister: Sister Mary David Hausmann of Rapid City; one daughter-in-law: Kathy Hausmann of Cheyenne, Wyo.; 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. His parents, wife, one son, James, six sisters, Kay, Margaret, Sister Daniel, Marie, Jeanie and Alma and five brothers, James in infancy, Bill, twin brother, Ray, Joe and Ed preceded him in death. Honorary urnbearers will be Leonard's grandchildren: James, Kara, Justin, Stacie, Stefanie, Jeremy, Jodi, Shawn, Angie, Toby and Fran. The pianist will be Monica Peldo. Condolences may be sent to www.carlsenfh.com. Carlsen Funeral Home and Crematory of Aberdeen has been entrusted with arrangements.
