Toni, the beloved matriarch of Highwood, died Thursday evening, April 22, 2010. Toni was born in Miltonville, Kansas on April 20, 1914. At the age of 3, she moved with her parents, John and Myrtle Davison, and siblings to Highwood. She graduated from Highwood High School and Dillon College and became a teacher at Black Butte School. She married Roy Knudson in 1934, and, in the decades following, raised a family of five children on their farm near Highwood. In 1973, Roy suffered a massive stroke and the couple moved to Highwood, where Toni cared for Roy until his death in 1987. Toni remained in Highwood until recently, relocating and enjoying the camaraderie at both the Sunrise Bluffs Retirement Home and in the Personal Care Unit of the Missouri River Medical Center, where she much enjoyed her remaining days. Toni was a "people person" who showed great compassion for all she came to know. She forged strong family ties and friendships that lasted a lifetime. She was a passionate and devoted citizen of the town of Highwood and gave much of herself to the community in a multitude of ways. She was a member of the Highwood Women's Club, a sportswoman, an avid bowler and a devoted fan of the Mountaineers. In later years, she was a member of the Highwood Senior Citizens and a 55-year member of the Bethany Chapter of Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Matron from 1971-1972. An avid reader, Toni was also a talented painter and poet. She spent much of her life writing about those she loved, as well as chronicling her life through poetry. Her most beloved poem, "Trails End Ranch," was published in the "The Trails and Tales of Highwoods" (circa 1988). She also published, "A Treasure Chest of Memories," dedicating it to her multitude of family and friends. In earlier years, "Grandma Toni and Grandpa Roy" loved the outdoors and often took their grandchildren on extended camping trips. Toni was also known for her quick wit and sense of humor, as well as her candor and strength of character. Toni was preceded in death by her mother and father, John and Myrtle Davison; husband, Roy; beloved daughter, Kay Duvall; four sisters, Nadine, Irene, Marjorie and Jean; and five brothers, John, Bink, Bob, Ted and Benny Lee. Survivors include a daughter, Peggy Anne (Fred) Booth; sons, Gary (Sharon) Knudson, Ken (Phyllis) Knudson and Russ (Diana) Knudson; son-in-law, Earl Duvall; sisters-in-law, Marabeth Davison, Mary Davison, and Genevieve Davison; many nieces and nephews; 15 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren. Our beloved Toni will be greatly missed by all.
