Description	:	Leonora was born during a blizzard on Feb. 10, 1897 at the farm of her grandparents, Adolph and Amelia Marten, near the Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ south of Storm Lake. Her parents, August and Anna Marten Siekmann, had lost their way from their own home in Lincoln Township near Albert City, but the team of horses headed through the storm across Storm Lake on the ice making it possible for Siekmanns first child to be born at her grandparents home. Leonora's girlhood was spent on the Siekmann farm west of Albert City. She was baptized and confirmed at the Evangelical and Reformed Church in Grant Township and attended country school in Lincoln Township before coming into Storm Lake for high school. Then in 1915 Lincoln-Lee, the first country consolidated school in the United States to include a high school was established with the Governor of Iowa, G. W. Clark giving the opening address. In 1917 Leonora was Lincoln-Lee's first graduate. After her graduation, Leonora worked as a clerk and bookkeeper in various Albert City stores until her marriage on June 28, 1939 to Elmer Martz of Sioux Rapids. The couple lived on farms near Marathon throughout their married life and were active members of the United Methodist Church of Rembrandt. Following Elmer's death on Oct. 16, 1956, Leonora moved to Storm Lake where she enjoyed meeting and helping customers as a clerk at a downtown hardware store for eight years. Leonora was a devout member of the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake, the United Methodist Women, and her church circle. She belonged to the Upper Room Sunday School class and for a number of years served on the church board. She also was a member of Sorosis Club and the Order of Eastern Star. Throughout her life Leonora enjoyed people and for many years after her own retirement, she would provide comfort and company for others by sitting with patients facing lonely hours of suffering in the hospital or in their own homes. She made many good and lasting friends during her long life spent in various communities in Buena Vista County. Mrs. Martz was one of Buena Vista County's oldest longtime residents. Leonora Amelia Siekmann Martz, passed away on Saturday, Apr. 1, 1995 at the age of 98 years and 21 days. Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, Elmer; three sisters, Edna Johnson Swanson, of the Albert City community; Amelia Snyder, of the Linn Grove and Sioux Rapids areas; Mabel Layng, who once taught in Rembrandt and Storm Lake and later lived in eastern Iowa; and her brother, Theodore Siekmann who for many years lived on the family farm in Lincoln Township.
