Read More	LOCAL LADY DIED MONDAY FOLLOWING STOVE EXPLOSION Miss Leota Fry Was Critically Burned Early Monday and Died in Hospial The tragedy here Monday morning which resulted in the death that evening of Miss Leota Fry was one of the saddest in the history of the community. Miss Fry was not only one of the popular ladies of this place but she was a beloved teacher in our public schools where she had served for several years faithfully and where she was held in the highest esteem by her fellow teachers, by the pupils in her room as well as by every student attending the public schools. The accident which resulted in her death occurred about 7 o'clock Monday morning. She arose at her usual hour and in order to hurry the fire in the heating stove, poured kerosene from a can into the stove. At once there was an explosion, thought to have been caused by live coals unseen by her, and flames shot out of the stove and set fire to her light sleeping garments. Not realizing she was so seriously burned and lamenting the fact that she had so thoughtlessly poured kerosene in the stove, she rushed to a porch. Her sister, Mrs. Homer Crary who was with her, immediately called doctors, who after a cursory examination, ordered her removal to a hospital and she was taken in an ambulance to the county hospital in Webster City. Doctors there after an examination announced that about three-fourths of her body was covered with third degree burns and that her condition was critical. Later in the afternoon it was realized that she could not survive long and she died that evening about 8:15 o'clock. Her suffering was intense but she bore it with that stoicism which had during her life marked her every daily task. Her death brought real sorrow to every home here for she was beloved by all who knew her. In the local schools where she had served as teacher for seven years, teachers and pupils alike are heartbroken over her death for her's is the third death of a faculty members in as many years. Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 2:00 o'clock in the family home and at 2:30 in the auditorium of the Stratford school building and will be in charge of the Revs. S. Lumley and A.E. Appelquist. * * * One of the largest and most impressive funeral services held in Stratford for some time was that of the late Miss Leota Fry, conducted Thursday afternoon by the Revs. S. Lumley and A.E. Appelquist. A short service was held in the family home after which the funeral procession formed and made its way to the Stratford school auditorium. The procession was headed by the pastors followed by six flowers girls, pupils in Miss Fry's grades, honorary pall bearers, active pall bearers and members of Avon chapter of the Order of Eastern Star. When the above mentioned had taken their places in the auditorium and remained standing, the casket bearing the remains of the one so near and dear to so many, was placed in the northwest corner of the room and the family and relatives seated. A ladies quartet from the Order of Eastern Star, composed of Mrs. Lucille Paden, Mrs. Florence Peterson, Mrs. Maude Peterson and Miss Minnie Williams sang "The Old Rugged Cross," after which the Rev. S. Lumley read the scripture and offered prayer. The Rev. A.E. Appelquist sang "Have Thine Own Way Lord," a request by the family. The Rev. Lumley then brought a message of sympathy and consolation to the bereaved family and friends while the Rev. Appelquist spoke as a friend and neighbor of the family, reminding those present of the words of the Master when He said, "What I do, thou knowest not now, but thou shalt know hereafter." The ladies quartet sang "The City Foursquare" and the Rev. Lumley closed the service with prayer. The hundreds of friends present and the many beautiful floral tributes was a token of the love and high esteem in which the departed one was held in the entire community. The service at the grave was in charge of Avon chapter, Order of Eastern Star, its officers and members paying a glowing tribute to their late worthy matron, the ceremony being very beautiful left a lasting impression upon all present. The remains were laid to their final resting places on the family lot in Oakwood cemetery, north of Stratford. Obituary Norma Leota Fry was born Aug. 26, 1897 in Stratford, and died in the county hospital in Webster City April 10, 1932, at the age of 35 years, 7 months, 14 days. Educated in Stratford, finishing with the class of 1916 and completing her education in the Iowa State Teachers college in Cedar Falls, she taught at Correctionville and Fort Dodge. Coming back to Stratford 7 years ago she has taught in the local schools ever since, her first class graduating last May. She was a member of the Methodist church and at the time of her death was worthy matron of Avon chapter, Order of Eastern Star.
