Read More	Written and researched by Great- niece Carolyn J (Morrison) Gutzmer LEROY HAROLD ELSTON September 15, 1856 - May 17, 1918 LEROY HAROLD ELSTON was born to Warren Demmit Elston and Lydia Ann Brown September 15, 1856 in or near Freeport, Stephenson County, Illinois. Before Leroy was born his parents, along with his two older half-siblings, Ellen Mae and William N. Sterling, his baby sister, Anna Jane, his grandparents, John Wadsworth and Anna (Baird) Elston, and his Uncle Jim Elston's family, came to Stephenson County, Illinois sometime in the late summer of 1854 settling in or around Ridott and Freeport, Stephenson County, Illinois. When LeRoy was just a few months old his Grandpa John and father, Warren D. purchased some farm land in Leaf River Twp, Ogle County in 1857. The family moved to the small Illinois farming community near the Villages of Leaf River and Lightsville where his remaining eight siblings were born and he grew to manhood helping his father and grandfather with the farming and threshing in and around the Leaf River area. He first farmed and then did construction work by trade. He probably was self employed and built houses for a living. He married Elizabeth (Lizzie) McCarthy, daughter of John and Mary L. McCarthy, in Battle Creek, Sac Co, Iowa April 18, 1883. They had two sons: John Dennis and Raymond Leroy Elston. In 1883 and 1884 Leroy and Elizabeth were living in Maple Twp, Ida County before moving to Cook Twp,Sac County in 1885. John Dennis Elston was born in Battle Creek, Ida County, Iowa Feb 23, 1884. He moved to Sac County, Iowa about 1885 working for the Cook Ranch near Odebolt. He later moved to Odebolt where he remained until his death. On April 10, 1889 in Odebolt Lizzie, 26 years old, gave birth to their second son, Raymond Leroy but fourteen days later, April 24, Lizzie died probably from complications from childbirth leaving Leroy with five year old John Dennis and his new 14 day old son. Raymond was baptized April 30, 1889 by Rev. P. Peschong at the St. Martin's Catholic Church in Odebolt. On June 24, 1889 Leroy signed adoption papers for Baby Raymond when he was 2 months 14 days old to Chauncey and Ada H. (Conger) Francisco of Odebolt, Iowa. After Lizzie's death Leroy continued to live in Odebolt building homes and doing other construction work for a living. His sister and brother, Lottie and Morris Hawkins Elston were living with him in Odebolt. His sister, Lottie, married David Milton Dunkelberger at his home in Odebolt July 16, 1890. On Jan 6, 1892 Leroy married Eva Mae Lesher at her parents, Daniel O. Lesher and Sarah C. (Unknown), home. Eva had a 2 year old son, born January 31, 1890, William Harrison last name unknown. Apparently Leroy adopted Billy (as he was known) or he just took his step-father's last name for he was always known as William (Bill) Harrison Elston throughout his entire life. Eva and Leroy had four children: Mabel Maude, Floyd Leroy, Robert Warren and Doris Mae. Leroy died May 17, 1918 at the farm of his brother-in-law, David Milton Dunkelberger Laurel, Troy Twp, Sully County, South Dakota. He was helping his brother-in-law and nephews build a new home when he came down with pneumonia. He was brought back to his home in Odebolt for burial and was buried May 20, 1918 in the Odebolt City Cemetery. His burial is recorded at the Odebolt City Hall. There is no marker for Leroy or his wife, Eva. She remarried and died in 1938.
