Leslie A. Toenjes of Anamosa died Thursday, April 3, 1997 at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids, following an extended illness. Leslie August Toenjes was born July 21, 1913 in Wayne Township, Jones County, Iowa, the son of Arend Gerhard and Mary Henrietta Zimmerman Toenjes. He received his education in the rural schools of Cass Township. On October 24, 1940, he married A. Pauline Anderson at the United Methodist Church, Anamosa. The couple farmed on the Toenjes family farm in Wayne Township, where he raised purebred Duroc hogs. He retired from active farming in 1980. He had been active in 4-H for many years serving as a leader. Survivors include his wife, Pauline; a daughter, Janice (Doug) Secrist of Viola; two sons, Gary (Shirley) Toenjes and Randy (Debra) of anamosa; four sisters, Edna Dirks and Irma Bodecker, Velda (Wilfred) Schatz, all of Monticello, Luella Ulferts of Anamosa, and a brother, Irvin (Ruby) Toenjes of Anamosa; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Jean, and his parents. Goettsch funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
