Survivors include her youngest sister, Velda Schatz of Monticello, sister-in-law Ruby Toenjes, and several nieces and nephews. Edna was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest, two sisters--Irma Bodeker of Monticello, and Luella Ulferts of Anamosa, and two brothers-- Leslie Toenjes and Irvin Toenjes, both of Anamosa. Edna was born August 21, 1908, in rural Anamosa to Arend Gerd Toenjes and Maria H. Zimmerman Toenjes. She was baptized September 27, 1908, and confirmed April 13, 1924 at Wayne Zion Lutheran Church. On July 14, 1927, she married Ernest E. Dirks. Edna and Ernie lived on the same farm in rural Anamosa from 1927 until his passing on October 15, 1961. Edna continued to live on the farm and was later joined by her mother whom she cared for. In September, 1968, they moved to Monticello where Edna continued to care for her mother until her death in 1969. Then Edna babysat for the children in her neighborhood for several years and also enjoyed keeping scrapbooks of family history and photo albums. With the help of her sister and her sister's husband, Edna was able to stay in her own home until 2004 when, at the age of 95, she moved to the Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to Jan Toenjes for her weekly visits with Edna which meant so much to her and to all of us.
