The Nelson Gazette (Nelson, NE), Thursday, June 16, 1921; pg. 1 =========================== Grand Island Independent, Friday, July 1, 1921, pg 8 The crowd which gathered in the opera house and on the streets adjacent on June 5th, to do honor to the memory of Leslie Northrope [sic] whose body was brought overseas for burial at Edgar was the largest congregated here in years. The opera house was filled to its capacity. It is estimated that possibly 1,200 were at the cemetery. The decorations were flags and ferns and were the more beautiful because of their simplicity. Occupying the seat next the stage were a number of veterans of the Civil War and the American Legion felt itself honored by their presence. In the procession of khaki clad men were comrades in arms from Davenport, Clay Center, and Fairfield. The troops formed in open rank in front of the building and between the rows of soldiers passed the funeral procession. Six Red Cross nurses and four naval officers acted as flower bearers, then the firing squad, next the relatives and near friends of the departed followed by nearly one hundred soldiers and sailors of the World War. A male quartet from Fairfield sang “One By One.” Post Commander Paul Haltan read the introduction of the services and invocation was offered by Y. S. Beans, pastor of the Church of Christ, who was in the overseas service. Song by quartet “Where Are the Boys of the Old Brigade.” The following obituary was read: Private Leslie Montgomery Northrop was born at Edgar, Neb., April 14, 1900 and died in the hospital at Haricourt, Haute-Saone, France, Oct. 12, 1918 at the age of 21 years, 5 months and 28 days. He was the third son of Mr. and Mrs. D. Northrop now of Giltner. He was called into service and left for camp June 28, 1918. He sailed for France a few weeks later, he was a member of the Supply Co., 352nd Infantry, his death was due to pneumonia. The members of the family who survive him are his parents, three brothers, Earl, of Aurora, Edwin, of Giltner, and Clinton, of Edgar and two sisters, Mrs. Clifford Benson of Giltner and Mrs. Floyd Gotheredge, of Harvard.
