Interment will take place in the Oregon Trail Memorial Cemetery at Bridgeport with military honors by the Bridgeport Honor Guard. Memorials may be given in care of the family for other memorials to be established at a later date. Condolences may be left on-line at [email protected] He was born Oct. 29, 1920, in Fairmont, the son of Harry Carl and Gladys Marie (Peterson) Murrell. He attended and graduated from Fairmont High School with the Class of 1940. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps on Jan. 20, 1942, after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Lester was involved in the Battle of Tarawa, receiving a Purple Heart for his injuries, and the Battle of Guadalcanal. He also served on the islands of Tinian and Saipan - it was there that he received the nickname "Punchy" from a Marine comrade. While on leave, Lester visited Oshkosh, and met the love of his life and future wife. After an honorable discharge Jan. 19, 1946, he returned to Nebraska. On Jan. 19, 1947, he was united in marriage to Laurine Ida Zorn in Oshkosh. To this union, five children were born. He owned and operated L&S Grocery in Oshkosh with his brother-in-law, Stanley Zorn, until 1956. Punchy then moved his family to Bridgeport and was the friendly butcher at the Jack and Jill store for over 40 years. After his retirement, he was custodian for the Bridgeport Post Office until the age of 80. Many Bridgeport athletes will remember Punchy as their first Little League baseball coach. He also helped train Bridgeport's Golden Gloves boxers. Punchy was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Bridgeport and the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Bridgeport. He enjoyed being a part of the Prairie Winds Community Center Card Club and was an avid Philadelphia Phillies fan, as well as a big supporter of the Bridgeport Baseball program. Punchy loved supporting and attending his children and grandchildren's activities. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Laurine Murrell of Bridgeport; son and daughter-in-law, Chuck and Stefani Murrell of Bridgeport; daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Ann and Rick Hessler of Gering, Pat and Lou Panas, and Nancy Wallesen, all of Bridgeport; he was affectionately called "Papa" by his nine grandchildren, Amy and Mel Langford of Plano, Texas; Jill and Mike Reagle of Garden City, Kan.; Kate and Ken Schneider of Hays, Kan.; John and Darci Panas of Evans, Colo.; Michelle Hessler of Omaha; Joe Panas and Cody, Chance and Charlee Wallesen, all of Bridgeport, and their friends; three great-grandchildren, Gracie Reagle, Olivia Schneider and Caden Panas; sister-in-law, Darlene Murrell of Lincoln; and numerous other family members.
